Telus bails on unlimited internet, bandwidth plays on for a price

It seems the days of cheap, unlimited internet are over. With Telus's announcement that it is implementing usage-based charges in B.C. and Alberta, all major Canadian internet service providers are now using data caps when billing customers. Usage-based pricing is when consumers pay internet service providers for a specific amount of data they agree to consume instead of a flat fee for unlimited data.

Get online to keep up with shoppers, small businesses told

Growth in online spending is continuing to outstrip growth in traditional retail, and local businesses are being warned to keep up or face being left on the shelf. Figures from the NAB showed Australians spent more than $16 billion online last year, with online groceries becoming more popular than ever. Online spending has slowed significantly in recent years, down from about 30 per cent in 2012 to 10 per cent last year, but growth of the sector continues to more than double that of traditional retail.

PayPal-like Visa checkout wants to simplify online shopping

Watch out, PayPal. Visa is gearing up for a major international expansion of its "Checkout" digital payment service this year. The American financial services giant announced plans to expand the service — first launched this summer in the U.S., Canada, and Australia — to 13 new markets. By the end of the year, Visa Checkout will also be available in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Hong Kong, Peru, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UAE.

Web standard promising faster page loads wins approval

A new version of the HTTP standard that promises to deliver Web pages to browsers faster has been formally approved, the Internet protocol's first revision in 16 years. The specifications for HTTP 2.0 have been formally approved, according to a blog post by Mark Nottingham, who as chairman of the IETF HTTPBIS Working Group serves as the standard effort's leader. The specifications will go through a last formality — the Request for Comment documenting and editorial processes — then be published, Nottingham wrote.
