Enhanced crystallization of polylactide by adding a multiamide compound
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polylactide has attracted considerable attention due to its excellent properties of renewability, biodegradability, biocompatibility, high strength, and modulus compared with conventional petroleum-based polymers. But although PLA has so many advantages, materials based on it crystallize slowly and are difficult to process. In fact, PLA articles remain almost amorphous under practical processing and molding techniques. The strength and stiffness of amorphous PLA decrease rapidly at temperatures over 60°C. These properties have limited the expansion and diversification of PLA applications. More

Improving biodegradable polymer nanocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Natural source poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)—referred to in this article as P34HB—is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyester produced by numerous bacteria. It has good toughness and process properties when compared with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) because of the chain of four hydroxybutyrate groups it includes. Due to its good toughness, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, it has been widely used in the fields of biomedicine and the environment. However, low mechanical strength and poor crystallizability have limited its application. More

Bridge made from recycled plastic bottles
Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We've seen recycled bottles turned into car seats for Ford's 2012 Focus electric vehicle. And we've seen plans by Boeing to recycle composites used in its Dreamliner plane for nonstructural uses in aircraft. Now recycled bottles and other plastic products destined for landfills have been turned into structural, weight-bearing elements of a 90-foot heavy-load bridge in Scotland. More

Gas subsidies threaten Saudi petrochemicals
The National    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Natural gas is currently offered to producers at a fixed subsidised rate of 75 cents per million British thermal units even as consumption outweighs supply. The price, however, was set at 1998, when crude was at $13 a barrel, compared with more than $100 today. The petrochemicals sector is part of Saudi Arabia's government strategy to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on petrodollars. The government has been unable to provide sufficient quantities, however, to keep up with the needs of a growing economy. More

Living in a materials world
Process and Control Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The next quarter century will undoubtedly see an acceleration of the existing trend towards the use of advanced composite materials in junction and control boxes, thinks Graham Fox of electrical engineering firm Cee-Norm. Stronger and lighter than steel enclosures, plastics are cheaper to manufacture, cheaper to install, and in the case of the second- and third-generation materials now being used, at least equal in safety. Oil price would skyrocket if Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If Iran were to follow through with its threat to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a vital transit route for almost one-fifth of the oil traded globally, the impact would be immediate: Energy analysts say the price of oil would start to soar and could rise 50 percent or more within days. More

Manufacturing economic activity expands again, although plastics contracted
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
December 2011 marked the 29th consecutive month that economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded, according to the nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing Institute for Supply Management Report on Business. That positive outlook notwithstanding, of the 18 manufacturing industries tracked by the ISM, only nine reported growth in December, and none of those was in the plastics category. More

Polymer scientist creates grime-fighting garments that purify air
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It is an unlikely collaboration: She is a fashion designer whose creations have been worn by Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince while he is a world-renowned polymer chemist. But together, Helen Storey and Tony Ryan are fusing style and substance to create clothes that purify the air we breathe. Their "Catalytic Clothing" venture makes use of existing self-cleaning technology found in paints and glass which employ photocatalysts to break down harmful airborne pollutants like nitrous oxide emitted by cars and factories. Metabolix makes a plastic that fully biodegrades in the ocean
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Keeping litter out of the ocean isn't easy, though, and most biodegradable plastics don't break down well in marine environments—they require the relative warmth of soil or a compost heap. A new plastic on the market degrades quickly both on land and in seawater. Polyhydroxyalkanoate plastic, better known as PHA, has been around in labs for decades but became commercially available only in October 2010 through a joint venture between Metabolix and Archer Daniels Midland. Russia's WTO entry could shake up plastics sector
Plastics & Rubber Weekly    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Russian polymers market is on the verge of big changes, due to the long-awaited accession of Russia into the World Trade Organization. As part of the agreement, within two to three years of accession Russia will reduce import duties on basic polymers from the existing 10 percent to 6.5 percent. However, duties on basic polymers including polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC in 2012 will remain at the current level. PET import duties will be reduced from 5 percent to 4 percent in 2013.
