Cheap plastic could be used to detect nukes
KGO-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Detection of nuclear material just got a little easier. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has announced a new material for sniffing out nuclear bombs, and it amounts to a cheap piece of plastic. It could be the future of nuclear detectors. It can tell the difference between neutron radiation and gamma radiation. That's important to people in charge of protecting ports of entry and borders. Neutrons indicate plutonium or uranium, material that can be used to make a bomb. More

SPE HIGHLIGHTS

Improved polypropylene/clay nanocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polypropylene/montmorillonite nanocomposites are popular with researchers and industry due to their high aspect ratio and nanoscale filler distribution, which improves the composite properties at low content compared to conventional microfillers (<5wt percent="" rather="" than="">30wt percent). However, to disperse well, the naturally hydrophilic MMT has to be organically modified with quaternary alkyl ammonium ions (such as an octadecylamine group). More

Kenaf-fiber-reinforced copolyester biocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Biodegradable polyesters are one family of polymers that have been considered as replacements for conventional plastic resins. Aliphatic polyesters, such as the naturally occurring polyhydroxyalkanoate family of materials and the synthetic polycaprolactone, have been investigated as possible alternatives to traditional plastics. However, their material properties seriously affect the versatility of these materials. More
