Biodegradable packaging material 'perishes' within 6 months
Food Production Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Israeli researchers are developing a biodegradable packaging material that automatically "perishes" within 180 days — providing a "green" solution for the food and drink industry. According to Israel-based developer TIPA, the material, which is a mix of biodegradable polymers, will degrade in compost within six months — leaving an organic residue. More

Dispersed nanoparticles give stronger plastics
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polymer composites are used by just about every industry from aviation to electronics, medical devices and packaging. Tweaking the composition of these compounded polymer systems makes them adaptable to new applications. A new dry milling process creates nanoparticle-coated fillers that improve the strength and thermal stability of polypropylene composites. More

Polypyrrole/graphene oxide composites with improved conductivity and solubility
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The insolubility in common solvents and infusibility of conducting polymers, such as polypyrrol, generally make them poorly processable either via a solution technique or by melt-processing methods. Doping polypyrrole with graphene oxide during polymer synthesis improves the water solubility and electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite. More

Ordered planar polymers created for the first time
ETH Life    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Scientists under the direction of ETH Zurich have created a minor sensation in synthetic chemistry. They succeeded for the first time in producing regularly ordered planar polymers that form a kind of "molecular carpet" on a nanometer scale. More

TPE resin pricing: Ethylene, polypropylene, propylene continue to rise
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Uncertain contract pricing led to choppy spot resin trading, in what The Plastics Exchange called a "very interesting week in the plastics markets" in which spot polyethylene was steady while spot polypropylene rose another $0.04 per pound. At the end of the month, several major PE producers pushed off the January $0.06 per pound price increase and will now look to implement it in February. More

Animal-free plastics skyrocket for medical components
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Several resin producers now offer grades of plastics that are "animal free" in response to concerns about potential contamination from bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad-cow disease. Fears about the neurological disease peaked in the United Kingdom in 1993 at almost 1,000 new cases per week. Since then, the number of BSE cases has dropped sharply. More

New method for controlled production of structured foams
AZoM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Packaging, insulation and impact protection are examples of commercial uses of polymer foams. Depending on the intended application, the properties required of these foams can differ greatly. In the journal Angewandte Chemie, a team of German, Irish and French researchers led by Cosima Stubenrauch at the University of Stuttgart has now introduced a new method for the controlled production of structured foams. Their technique is based on the polymerization of foamed emulsions of oil in water. More

Research: New automotive plastic is strong as steel
Lanka Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Japan's Toyoda Gosei Co. has developed a type of plastic for car hoods and fenders that it says are as strong as those produced from sheet steel but 40 percent lighter. The company has no intention of entering the auto body business. Rather, Toyota Motor Corp. plans to collect data on the material's performance characteristics in hopes of encouraging carmakers to adopt it when they begin shifting from sheet metal to plastics for mass-produced models. Pulsed lasers make lightweight glasses out of polymers
Ars Technica    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Microscopically, glasses are solids that look more like liquids — they lack a regular crystalline structure. The liquid character is no accident, since a typical glass is made by cooling a fluid rapidly. If done in the right way, this skips the usual crystallization that occurs at the freezing point of the material, leaving a disordered state. If we want to create a glass with specific properties, we need precise control over the fluid-to-glass transition, but that has proven very difficult to achieve in practice. More
