Scientists use artificial womb for research into embryos

Scientists at Nottingham University in England have developed an artificial womb to aid research into how early embryos develop. The new device is effectively a soft polymer bowl that mimics the tissue of a mammal's uterus in order to grow mouse embryos outside the body for long enough to observe the embryo developing in the vital first eight days of life. More

Injectron adds solar-panel system at New Jersey plant

Injectron Corp. recently covered its roof with a 1.5-megawatt solar-panel system as a way to cut its energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint. The project took about nine months and covers most of the roof of the 280,000-square-foot Plainfield facility. It takes advantage of the roof’s southern exposure, and any surplus power can be sold back to the grid. More



BASF acquires foam extrusion technology supplier

In a bid to tap into Europe's wind-energy sector, BASF has purchased the PET foam business of Italy-based extrusion technology provider B.C. Foam S.p.A. The acquisition includes production facilities and intellectual property rights, BASF said in a press release, as well as a special extrusion process which enables the production of high-performance PET foams with very high densities. More

The performance data of the Lotus Elise-E lightweight electrical sports car that Evonik Industries presented at the recent Car Symposium in Bochum, Germany, are impressive, as is its extensive usage of performance plastics. The vehicle weighs just 950 kilograms, has a power of 150 kW, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The sandwich structure with Rohacell polymethacrylimide structural foam and carbon fibers makes the body 60-70 percent lighter than a comparable steel structure. More

California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. joined carbonLITE, a leading producer of bottle-grade raw material used to make new bottles, to announce the official grand opening of the world's largest bottle-to-bottle plastic recycling plant. Located in Riverside, Calif., the 220,000-square-foot plant has already created over 100 green jobs and will recover more than two billion plastic PET bottles annually from California's Curbside and Redemption Value programs. Quantum dots are tiny crystals of semiconducting material that produce fluorescence. The color or the wavelength of the fluorescence is dependent on the size, shape and composition of QDs. Larger QDs tend to emit light at the red end (longer wavelengths) of the electromagnetic spectrum. As the size of the QDs decrease, so does the wavelength of emitted light. This tunability of emission wavelength is one reason why QDs have become popular for use as fluorescent markers in biological research. More

Rising oil prices push down profits at Bayer

German chemicals and drugs group Bayer posted a 9 percent drop in fourth-quarter profits as price rises failed to offset soaring oil-derived raw materials costs at its plastics division. Bayer's MaterialScience unit, the world's top maker of foam chemicals and transparent plastics for car lights and sports goggles, reported a 64 percent slump in adjusted earnings. More



OPEC oil output rises to more than 3-year high

OPEC oil output has risen to the highest level since October 2008 due to a further recovery in Libya's production, as well as higher supplies from Angola and Saudi Arabia, a Reuters survey found. Supply from all 12 members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries averaged 31.23 million barrels per day in February, up from 30.95 million bpd in January, the survey of sources at oil companies, OPEC officials and analysts found. More



Nebraska plant to make bio-resins for plastics

A Northeast Nebraska start-up company expects to break ground this spring on a commercial-scale plant that turns ag-based material into resins for the plastics industry. Last year, Laurel BioComposite LLC started making small batches of "Bio-Res" pellets from distillers grain, an ethanol byproduct. Laurel BioComposite said its pellets, which can be inserted directly into injection molders, are particularly suited for such end products as shipping pallets, automotive parts, components in ag machinery, and lawn and garden containers. More

Production-run pellets made partially from plastic ocean litter have become a reality, thanks to 18 months of cooperation between packaging brand designer Method and recycler Envision Plastics Industries LLC. Method-brand products include household and personal-care items, but the company declined to name the product that will be made from the ocean scrap. More
