Brazil's plastics industry: Is now its time?
Plastics Engineering
Share

Brazil, the largest country in South America, has moved up to the sixth-largest economy in the world, and Brazil's plastics industry — the third-largest industrial employment sector in 2011 — hopes to grow along with it. This economic growth in Brazil has been many years in the making. Recently, the government has made a concerted effort to bring its people out of poverty and into the middle class. This growing middle class has a direct impact on plastics consumption of all types.

New biodegradable plastic bag is in the works
Finance & Commerce
Share

An Arkansas-based startup is hoping to turn a technology that originated at the University of Minnesota into a widely accepted alternative to plastic bags. The bags, under development by cycleWood Solutions, would be made from a material called lignin, which cycleWood claims is biodegradable within 150 days. Lignin exists in all plant life and is a largely discarded waste product from the biofuels and papermaking industries.

Scientists hatch plan to recycle eggshells into plastic
CNN
Share

Scientists from the University of Leicester in England are experimenting with a process that extracts the proteins found in eggshells, called glycosaminoglycans, which are commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry to help people with cartilage and connective tissue problems. The aim of the current project is to adapt the proteins to create a starch-based plastic that could then "bulk up" existing plastics and be molded into anything from shop fitting to supermarket meal trays.

Plastic electronics: A neat solution
University of Cambridge via PhysOrg
Share

Initially discovered in the late 1970s, plastic electronics is an expanding technology that is bringing a myriad of products incorporating flexible and transparent electronic circuits in which the active materials are deposited as printable inks onto polymer-based substrates using various printing technologies. A breakthrough in the development of a new generation of plastic electronic circuits by researchers brings flexible and transparent intelligent materials — such as artificial skin and interactive playing cards — a step closer.

Virginia company using feathers to make biodegradable plastic products
WTTG-TV
Share

The United States produces a lot of chickens and that means a lot of leftover feathers — 3 billion pounds a year that had very little value, until now. In Mt. Crawford, Va., Eastern Bioplastics, a 10-person company, is using chicken feathers to reduce America's use of oil. How? They're using them to make plastic products. Currently, most of the plastic on the market is made from petroleum.

Give graphene a squeeze to get electricity
University of Stanford via Futurity
Share

Graphene is a wonder material. It is 100 times better at conducting electricity than silicon. It is stronger than diamond. And, at just one-atom thick, it is so thin as to be essentially a two-dimensional material. Such promising physics have made graphene the most studied substance of the last decade. To the long list of exceptional physical properties of graphene, engineers have added yet another: piezoelectricity. Bend, squeeze or twist graphene, and it will produce an electric charge.

Plastic bans, EPR laws not going away
Plastics News
Share

Bans on plastic bags and take-out polystyrene containers aren't going to easily go away and are only part of a larger effort to get rid of products seen as litter or marine debris, says Laurie Hansen, executive director of the Western Plastics Association. And next on the horizon, she says, are extended producer responsibility laws. "They are all happening because litter is happening and marine debris is happening," Hansen said. "Litter and marine debris is the hot-button issue on the West Coast. Paper and aluminum sink, but that's not what's targeted. It's what floats, and that's plastic."

Shining a light on fingerprint detection
Royal Society of Chemistry
Share

Scientists in China have discovered a method for visualizing latent fingerprints found at the scene of a crime, which they say is very simple, rapid, does not require professional forensic treatment and does not destroy the print. Researchers noticed that the conjugated compound tetraphenylethene adhered to the greasy ridges of fingerprints via a hydrophobic interaction. TPE is nonfluorescent in acetonitrile solution, but when light with a 365nm wavelength is shone onto the solution, the compound can lose the extra energy by rotating.

New LSR capabilities featured at NPE2012
Plastics Today
Share

The rising importance of liquid silicone rubber molding in the American medical market was apparent in several exhibits and demonstrations at NPE2012 in Orlando, Fla. LSR provides improved clarity, heat and chemical resistance and better cost performance for high-precision parts compared to many other elastomers, including high-consistency silicone rubber. Many thermoplastic molders in the United States are adding LSR as medical device manufacturers seek contract manufacturers with broad capabilities.
