Canada prepares to introduce plastic money
Miami Herald Share
When you think of paying with plastic, most people think of credit or debit cards. However, that is going to have to change. Canada will soon join a growing list of countries that use a polymer-based plastic instead of paper for its cash. The new plastic money will be rolled out in phases with the $100 bill scheduled for introduction in November. In March 2012, a
$50 bill will be added to the mix and the rest of the smaller bills will be introduced by the end of 2013. More

Cost-effective, less polluting UV-absorbent film
SPE Plastics Research Online

Ultraviolet absorbers are widely used in the plastics industry to protect polymers from degradation. However, carbon black, a cheap and effective inorganic UV absorber, does not mix readily with polymer matrices or solutions, which limits its usefulness to the industry. Organic UV absorbers (such as derivatives
of aziminobenzene, benzophenone, and benzotriazole) can easily be added to polymers, but they are expensive. As a result, research on combining organic and inorganic absorbers has increased in recent years.

Scientists recently unveiled a new kind of plastic that can repair itself when exposed to ordinary light. The miracle material could extend the lifetime and improve the durability of dozens of polymer-based products, ranging from common household items such as bags and storage bins to inner tires and expensive medical equipment, the researchers said.

Priced to sell, polyethylene from Iran is making the rounds
Plastics Today
Share

Iran sits atop the second-largest oil and gas reserves globally. As in much of the oil-rich Middle East, the government there has decided to use its crude oil strength to help advance its stake in the
petrochemical industry. According to plastics pricing service ChemOrbis, one indication of this at present are the numerous and relatively low-cost Iranian PE offers this month in Italy, Turkey, China and Egypt.

EPA updates emission rule for PVC plants
Environmental Leader
Share

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently proposed stronger standards for facilities that produce polyvinyl chloride. The standards update emissions limits for toxics such as dioxin and vinyl chloride. The EPA has proposed maximum achievable control technology standards for emissions sources including PVC process vents, resin processing, equipment leaks, wastewater, heat exchangers and storage vessels.

Dow Chemical to up ethylene, propylene production
Reuters
Share

Dow Chemical Co. said it plans to increase ethylene and propylene production as the largest U.S. chemical maker seeks to benefit from growing supplies of natural gas liquids that U.S. shale fields are producing. Many North American energy companies are speeding exploration in basins like the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas because they contain natural gas with high liquids content.

Plastic pipe demand to rise, but ductile iron and concrete do better
Plastics Today
Share

Pipe made from concrete or ductile iron pipe is very heavy, and heavy too is the reliance of building engineers for decades on pipe made from these materials
for infrastructure projects. The result? Despite being outclassed in many ways by plastics pipe, the two established materials are able not only to keep their share of the market but actually will increase market share at a faster pace than plastics.

Chemical markets reel as oil prices rise
ICIS Chemical Business

Understanding the impact of high oil prices on the demand side of chemical markets is a murky business. The immediate macroeconomic impact of high crude is to
take money out of consumers' pockets. However, delegates at last week's ICIS European Purchasing conference heard some conflicting views from senior industry economic commentators.

More plastics recycling, not fees and bans, will reduce litter
The Oregonian (Commentary)
Share

A recent editorial in The Oregonian concludes that the Oregon Legislature has a choice: Adopt a flawed bill that bans plastic grocery bags and imposes new fees on shoppers or do nothing at all to reduce plastic litter. That's a false choice. Oregon can reduce litter without short-sighted bans, fees and fines that punish shoppers. With true bipartisan leadership
and cooperation among retailers, recyclers and plastics manufacturers, we can reduce litter through comprehensive plastics recycling that also creates jobs.
