New leather- and rubber-waste composites for use in footwear
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The footwear industry in Europe, and particularly in Portugal, concentrates on producing leather shoes. Attachment of the upper and lower parts of a shoe requires carding and/or roughing of bottom upper and sole materials. This generates leather and sole-material fibers, dust, or small scraps, which represent 5 to 15 percent by weight of the solid waste generated by footwear factories. Disposing of leather waste is expensive because of the increasing taxes associated with land fill and the presence of chromium that may be classified as hazardous waste according to European and Portuguese law. Operating window for peeling polyimide film
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polyimide (PI) is a polymeric material whose special structure (aromatic rings with imide groups) gives it superior thermal, mechanical, chemical, and electronic properties and also provides strong resistance for moisture absorption. PI has wide application in the aerospace, military, optical, and electronics industries. The solvent-casting process has served as a vital and efficient tool for producing PI thin films. One of the key issues in this process is that the film must be peeled from the steel belt smoothly and defect-free. Several physical and chemical approaches have been proposed to improve peeling, including using a water bath or air jet or a releasing agent such as hydrofluoric acid. More

Plastics industry representative says West Virginia positioned for growth
WVNS-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. plastics manufacturers are positioned for growth, and West Virginia is among the states that are most aggressively recruiting the industry, according to William R. Carteaux, president and chief executive officer of the Society of the Plastics Industry. Carteaux was in Point Pleasant on April 28 to address the annual meeting of the West Virginia Polymer Alliance Zone. He noted that several regions of the country — the west coast, northeast and mid-Atlantic states in particular — are not vigorously pursuing manufacturing facilities. More
