Gulf petrochemical industry on road to becoming global leader

The United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region are going to become one of the world's largest sources of petrochemical and plastic products as the oil-producing countries invest heavily in downstream petrochemicals. Last month Abu Dhabi-based polymer producer Borouge awarded $2.6 billion worth of contracts to expand its capacity and create the world's largest petrochemical complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. The plastics industry is one of the leading manufacturing sectors in Dubai, according to the Dubai Export Development Corporation 2009 report. More

The aerospace market is poised to provide significant business opportunities to companies that specialize in the design and fabrication of performance polymers and composites. OEMs are developing aircraft with diverse requirements in mind, most of which are extensions of existing needs. Brazil's plastic manufacturing industry to consolidate

According to one of the representatives within the plastic manufacturing industry in Brazil, the largest players in the industry must consolidate into bigger players in order to improve access to competitive raw materials and boost exports. Jose Ricardo Roriz, the president of the Brazilian national association of plastic industries Abiplast, recently told news sources, the industry, which is comprised of 11,200 companies throughout the country, has been working to increase its export levels, but over the last two years, it has run a deficit of close to $1 billion. Calling it a "de-industrialization decade", the U.S. Business and Industry Council's analysis of new trade and output data showed that 70 different U.S. manufacturing industries ran trade deficits in 2009 at a time when the recession depressed domestic demand, with alarming rates of decline going back to 2000. Plastics and related industries were not spared, according to the USBIC, with the material among the 15 of 114 industries that saw "unusually fast-growing import penetration rates," losing 15 percent or more of their home U.S. market to imports. Filipino company makes additive that renders plastic materials biodegradable

The Department of Science and Technology-Industrial Technology Development Institute recently verified a unique additive that makes plastic materials biodegradable, according to biodiesel pioneer Chemrez Technologies Inc. ChemrezTech said in a statement that the DOST-ITDI issued Environmental Technology Verification-013 for BioMate, manufactured by First In Colours Inc., a ChemrezTech sister company. ChemrezTech said BioMate is the first such additive in the P75-billion Philippine plastics film and bags industry to be verified by the ITDI as making plastics both photo and biodegradable, although many imported additives sold in the local market have made similar claims. Gas cracker project opens opportunities to invest in plastic

The Centre and the Assam government have undertaken an ambitious plan to encourage small and medium entrepreneurs to venture into the plastic industry which will get a boost with the commissioning of the Assam Gas Cracker Project in 2012. The gas cracker project coming up at Lepetkata in the Dibrugarh district of India would open up opportunities for investment in the plastic industry as a downstream project, state industry minister Pradyut Bordoloi said.
