Automotive Lightweighting Drives Plastic Materials and Processes
By Don Rosato
Innovative materials together with new production methods and reinforcing structures will play an important role in reducing automotive vehicle weight. Lower vehicle weight not only improves fuel efficiency but also reduces the load on the brakes and suspension systems. Currently, 15 percent of the average car's total weight is plastic material. Experts predict this use will more than double over the next five years as the auto industry gears up to meet new emissions regulations.

Adding Carbon Nanoparticles With Different Geometries to Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate)
SPE Plastics Research Online
Due to their exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, carbon nanomaterials (e.g., nanotubes and graphite nanoplatelets) inspire unflagging interest for application as fillers in polymer composites. The way in which the combination of 1-D and 2-D carbon nanofillers affects the performance of the composites therefore represents a significant area of interest.

    Passing the Skills Test
    Plastics Engineering
Given that plastics are not covered in mainstream education, they’re a mystery to most people outside the plastics industry. So it’s not surprising when new workers come onto a company’s production floor knowing little or nothing about polymeric materials. Proper training then becomes the key to long-term success. But that’s easier said than done.

Consumer Spending Will Accelerate in Second Half of 2015
    Plastics News
The monthly data that measures inflation-adjusted consumer spending in the U.S. posted solid gains at the end of 2014, but so far in 2015 the growth in this data has been sluggish. This is important for our outlook because consumer spending accounts for two thirds of the U.S. economy (as measured by the GDP data), therefore a strong economic recovery depends on a healthy and vibrant consumer sector.

Liquid Natural Gas Fuels a Future for Plastics Logistics
    The Wall Street Journal
I just want to say one word to you, just one word. Are you listening? Plastics. Make that two words: Plastics logistics. At the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association’s Industrial Conference in Long Beach, Owen Kean, Senior Director of the American Chemistry Council, said the boom in natural gas production in the U.S. is “rippling downstream” to the plastics industry.

    Active Packaging Gets Smarter
    Plastics Engineering
In this age of information, it’s no wonder that even our packaging is telling us valuable things about what’s inside. “Active” or “intelligent” packaging provides information on practically everything, from the state of its contents to when patients must take medication. Options include track and trace, featuring RFID tags and printed sensors; condition-monitoring or time/temperature indicators; security alert devices; and anti-microbial properties and shelf-life extension.

MIT Researchers Create Materials with Reconfigurable Surface Texture Using 3-D Printing
    AZoM
Researchers at MIT have developed an innovative 3-D printing method to produce soft materials having surface textures that are controllable by squeezing. Different types of textures, including bumpy, ridged, complex or smooth textures could be produced. The team had used a material that was made up of two different polymers that had different stiffness. They embedded more rigid particles in the polymer that was more flexible. When this soft material was squeezed, its surface changed into a pattern that was dependent on the shape of the more rigid embedded particles, as well as the distance between each of these particles.
