Exciton research rewrites design rules for polymers
Solar Novus Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lin X. Chen at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory is taking a fresh approach to improving organic solar cells by investigating the exciton, a "quasi-particle" few other researchers have focused on in the quest to help this promising yet seemingly lab-bound technology break out into the real world. Toward low-friction, low-wear polycarbonate
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polycarbonate is a high-molecular-weight, amorphous engineering thermoplastic that has exceptionally high-impact strength over a wide temperature range. PC is of great practical interest, being employed in a wide variety of applications. Despite its wide and expanding use, poor wear and scratch resistance restrict its applications, so there is increasing demand for new low-friction, low-wear materials that could improve its efficiency and operational life. Understanding the mechanical and electrical performance of organic solar cells
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Conjugated polymers are used in organic solar cells, which compared to inorganic solar cells are more flexible and lightweight. However, low efficiency, stability and lifetime are major difficulties with OSCs. Adding small amounts of carbon nanotubes can increase the strength and elastic modulus of polymer composites, and blends of carbon nanotubes and polymer have been used to develop ultrastrong lightweight materials and OSCs. Building nanographene by organic synthesis
Chemistry World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Japanese scientists are making tiny fragments of graphene using direct cross-coupling of C-H bonds to determine what effect size and edge geometry have on the properties of carbon materials. By bolting together aromatic hydrocarbons, they can build nanographene fragments with defined shapes in an attempt to relate geometry to performance. More

Carbon is key for getting algae to pump out more oil
Brookhaven National Laboratory via R&D Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Overturning two long-held misconceptions about oil production in algae, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory show that ramping up the microbes' overall metabolism by feeding them more carbon increases oil production as the organisms continue to grow. More
