Researchers develop paintable batteries
Eureka    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief Researchers at Rice University have developed a lithium-ion battery that can be painted onto virtually any surface. The rechargeable battery consists of five spray-painted layers — two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle — which each represent the components in a traditional battery. The effect of silver nanofillers on the properties of polystyrene
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nanocomposites comprised of metal nanoparticles embedded in polymer matrices usually exhibit a simple combination of the physical properties of the polymer, along with the specific optical or electrical characteristics associated with the nanoparticle. However, novel behavior can arise thanks to synergistic effects between the nanoparticles and polymer matrix. More

An excellent compatibilizer for PA66/ABS blends
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polyamide is one of the most important thermoplastics. Within the PA series, PA66 is mechanically strong and is widely used in automobile parts and apparatus casings. Nevertheless, PA66 has relatively low notched impact strength and dimensional stability, which limits its applications. Blending PA66 with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, which can provide toughness and better dimensional stability, would be expected to produce a useful material for circumstances that demand higher strength and stiffness. Peak plastic: One generation's trash is another generation's treasure
Discover Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 1956, M. King Hubbert laid out a prediction for how oil production in a nation increases, peaks and then quickly falls down. Since then many analysts have extended this logic and said that global oil production will soon max out — a point called "peak oil" — which could throw the world economy into turmoil. But if we're running out of oil, that also means that we're running out of plastic. More

US court upholds EPA's global warming rules
The Associated Press via Fox News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A federal appeals court upheld the first U.S. regulations aimed at reducing the gases blamed for global warming, handing down perhaps the most significant decision on the issue since a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that greenhouse gases could be controlled as air pollutants. The rules, which had been challenged by industry groups and several states, will reduce emissions of six heat-trapping gases from large industrial facilities such as factories and power plants, as well as from automobile tailpipes. Nanotechnology in fuel cells
AZoNano    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The catalytic electrodes in fuel cells are most often made from platinum. It has been known for some time that using platinum nanoparticles instead of a solid platinum surface increases efficiency, and allows much less metal to be used. One potential improvement to the current technology is to support the platinum nanoparticles on a porous surface, such as an activated carbon, or nanostructures like carbon nanotubes or nanowalls. Researchers synthesize printable, electrically conductive gel
Stanford University via PhysOrg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Jell-O-like material, from the labs of Stanford professors Yi Cui and Zhenan Bao, may have applications in areas as widespread as energy storage, medical sensors and biofuel cells. Stanford researchers have invented an electrically conductive gel that is quick and easy to make, can be patterned onto surfaces with an inkjet printer and demonstrates unprecedented electrical performance. • Obamacare ruling means medical device tax starts in 2013
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold nearly all the provisions of the two-year-old $940 billion health care reform law means that medical device manufacturers will begin paying a 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices in 2013. The tax is expected to cost device manufacturers $20 billion annually unless Congress can overturn that portion of the law. More

Small Pennsylvania molder makes big impact on health care recycling
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
American hospitals generate more than 400,000 tons of plastic and other packaging waste every year, and the percentage recycled is close to zero. That's about to change, in part because of a chance conversation an Erie, Pa., injection molder had on an airplane with a medical manufacturer. More

    Biodegradable nanoparticles slip through mucus
National Cancer Institute via Nanowerk News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have created biodegradable, ultra tiny, nanosized particles that can easily slip through the body's sticky and viscous mucus secretions to deliver a sustained-release medication cargo. The researchers developed the nanoparticles so that they not only penetrate mucus but degrade over time into harmless components. More

Clay-based coating on polyurethane foam may lead to sustainable flame retardants
NIST via AZoM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A team of researchers has created a novel clay-based coating, which may lead to a new generation of sustainable flame retardants for home furnishings. The thick coating includes a high quantity of flame-inhibiting clay particles. It sticks firmly to the surface of polyurethane foam that is used in children's car seats, carpet padding, furniture cushions and other products. More
