More cost-effective, superior biodegradable food packaging
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Biodegradable polymers such as poly(L-lactic acid) have received much attention due to their potential use, for example, in food packaging. However, PLA has low gas-barrier properties that limit its application in this area. By the same token, its oxygen transmission rate is comparable to that of polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene — just to name a few — which means that it might conceivably replace them. More

Thin film nano-indentation: an elastic foundation model
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Soft matter materials and assemblies are ubiquitous in biology and very useful in many advanced materials.1The performance of many such systems — such as microphase-separated block copolymers, polymer brushes and ultrathin polymeric films—depends on the synergy of hierarchically-organized structures. An enhanced understanding of these materials can be acquired from their nanometer-scale mechanical properties. In particular, mechanical characterization of nanophases is important for these efforts. PP half pipes and raffia make for world's lightest pallet
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plastics have taken on wood in the pallet arena for many years now, with injection-molded and thermoformed variants perhaps most visible. Pallets incorporating expanded polystyrene have also made some inroads. Now it's the turn of an interesting combination of polypropylene raffia and formed sheet to take up the challenge. More

'Cling-film' method makes efficient polymer solar cells
Solar Novus Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Scientists have recently shown that very simple and inexpensive manufacturing methods in which flexible layers of material are deposited over large areas like cling-film can be used to make efficient solar cell structures. The researchers showed that when complex mixtures of molecules in solution are spread onto a surface the different molecules separate to the top and bottom of the layer in a way that maximizes the efficiency of the resulting solar cell.
