What technical professionals need to know about the America Invents Act — Part 3
By Moris Amon
On Sept. 19, 2011, the U.S. Congress passed the Smith-Leahy America Invents Act. This law will have a profound effect on America's technological future — and, probably, on most of the readers of this newsletter. This series of articles outlines, for the benefit of nonlawyers, the changes it brings to the U.S. patent system. This article covers procedural changes to the utility patent application process.

Versatile polymer film synthesis method invented
    Phys.Org
Forming perfect porous polymer films is not enough; they need both large and small pores, and the process of making them needs to be simple, versatile and repeatable. Creatively combining already established techniques, Cornell materials researchers have devised a so-called hierarchical porous polymer film synthesis method that may help make these materials useful for applications ranging from catalysis to bioengineering.

Plastic balls bring savings for miners
    European Plastics News
A Queensland, Australia, technology company has invented a simple, yet sophisticated, plastic ball that helps miners track down lost gold. Brisbane-based Blast Movement Technologies produces blast-movement monitors — plastic balls that are installed near valuable mineral resources in dedicated drill holes before blasting and are easily located after a blast, enabling production teams to know exactly where ore and waste are so they can be separated.

MIT students release program to 3-D print high security keys
    Forbes
When lock maker Schlage imprinted the words "do not duplicate" across the top of the keys for their high-security Primus locks, they meant to create another barrier to reproducing a piece of metal that's already beyond the abilities of the average hardware store keymaker. One group of hackers, of course, took it instead as a direct challenge.

    Moldmaking in the mainstream?
    MoldMaking Technology
Will moldmaking in the mainstream help attract a future generation? Going to the source to get honest answers may help. It continues to amaze me how kids today still don't find manufacturing exciting; or, is it that we've just done a very poor job of marketing ourselves. I strongly believe the latter is the hard truth, and something which we need to address hard and fast!
