London 2012: Plastics power Olympic performance from head to toe and turf
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The drivers underlying the continuing adoption of polymer technology so prevalent in automotive, aerospace and other industries are also very much on the minds of the athletes going for gold in London — and the equipment makers supplying them. In competitions where hundredths of a second can mean the difference between a podium spot and the ranks of onlookers, every advantage in weight and overall performance is crucial. More

Aluminum phosphinate/epoxy flame-retardant composites: The influence of the alkyl group
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Epoxy resin has an important role in the aerospace, electrical, electronics and consumer appliance industries. For these applications, epoxy resin has to be flame retarded, but the most commonly used fire retardants are those containing halogens. These halogenated flame retardants release corrosive halogenated hydrocarbons upon combustion, and are themselves also often toxic or carcinogenic. More

Plasma helps polyethylene weather the sandstorm
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polyethylene is widely employed in a range of sectors because of its very advantageous properties. It is used extensively in agriculture, where its durability, flexibility and optical properties make it an ideal material for shelters and greenhouses to protect crops. Depending on its use, the lifespan of the material varies from a few months to several years, but climatic factors can reduce this time to just a few hours or days. More

How to avoid traps in plastic electronics
Georgia Institute of Technology via R&D Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plastic electronics hold the promise of cheap, mass-produced devices. But plastic semiconductors have an important flaw: The electronic current is influenced by "charge traps" in the material. These traps, which have a negative impact on plastic light-emitting diodes and solar cells, are poorly understood. More

Solar cell breaks world record for efficiency
University of Toronto via Futurity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Engineers have used inexpensive materials to create a solar cell certified at a world-record 7.0 percent efficiency. The solar cell represents a 37 percent increase in efficiency over the previous certified record. A breakthrough in the development of colloidal quantum dot films allowed the researchers to develop the solar cell. More

Unique anti-reflective and self-cleaning plastic films to be ramped up for industry use
A*STAR via PhysOrg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fast, high-volume production of plastics with specially engineered surfaces will soon be available using a cheaper and simpler method. IMRE and its Industrial Consortium On Nanoimprint partner companies are piloting roll-to-roll nanoimprint technology to mass produce two types of patterned nanoimprinted plastic films. These are films with low reflectivity and better viewing angles, as well as durable, scratch-resistant films with "self-cleaning" surfaces. More

Plastics unplugged: India's plastics industry copes with outages
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The sheer numbers around the power outages that darkened India recently — more than 600 million without electricity, grids collapsing in 14 states — placed the emerging country beneath a worldwide media spotlight. But for the Indian plastics industry, spotty power is a largely accepted reality in a country whose energy demand has consistently outstripped its production. More

Polymer replacement for the hydration shell
Chemistry World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The sheath of water molecules, called a hydration shell, that gives protein molecules the flexibility to do their catalytic job can be replaced by polymers, according to Adam Perriman of the University of Bristol and his co-workers. The findings challenge a long-standing belief that some hydration is needed to keep a protein functional by "feeding" its dynamical fluctuations. More

'Breathing' battery saves energy for rainy day
University of Southern California via Futurity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new low-cost, "air-breathing" battery has the capacity to store between eight and 24 hours' worth of energy. The rechargeable and eco-friendly battery uses the chemical energy generated by the oxidation of iron plates that are exposed to the oxygen in the air — a process similar to rusting. More
