Bioplastic elastomer debuts in safe, soft toys
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the first time, a soft plastic has been introduced that is safe, biodegradable and sustainable. A small Kansas-based startup company called Green Dot, which styles itself as a "biotechnology social enterprise that makes the world's only plant-based, compostable elastomer verified to meet U.S. and E.U. standards for 'compostability' has launched a pioneering material specifically designed for customers looking for a soft plastic solution that "treats the planet with respect." Toward improved impact performance of injection-molded plastic parts
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plastic components for demanding industries, such as the automotive and aeronautic ones, are often required to withstand deformation at high strain rate during their service life. Safety regulations impose increasingly demanding specifications for energy absorption during impact loading of plastic components. However, knowledge of the impact behavior of polymeric materials is sketchy, and the use of valid predictive methodologies and tools is rare. More

Stronger eco-film for food packaging and medicine
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Biosynthesized polyhydroxyalkanoates are biodegradable and renewable. As a result, they have attracted much attention recently as candidates to replace petroleum-derived plastics. Among them is the copolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate), commonly known as P(3HB-co-4HB). Its processing properties are superior to those of pure poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), and its mechanical properties are adjustable. More

Polymer-linking technology joins the 'unjoinable'
Kiel University via R&D Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ever tried to paint on top of silicone? After a few hours, the paint will peel off. Silicone is a so-called low surface energy polymer, well known from flexible baking forms: A synthetic material that has an extremely low adhesion or "stickiness." Teflon is similarly nonsticky and well known from frying pans. Researchers have now developed the first technology that is capable of joining these two "unjoinable" materials. More

Army sends 3-D printing labs to Afghanistan for on-demand gear
Popular Science    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
3-D printing has yielded items both fascinating and potentially troubling. Now we can add one more to the list of printed achievements: The U.S. Army has had a rapid prototyping wing for some time, and now they've deployed full teams — complete with scientists and 3-D printers — to Afghanistan. The Rapid Equipping Force, as the wing is known, will be there to print one-off tools from a 20-foot shipping container stuffed to the gills with technology. More

InVivo will use 46 3-D printers to make spinal scaffolds
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The use of plastic scaffolds to treat human spinal cord injuries is moving close to reality. InVivo Therapeutics has developed a treatment based on a biocompatible polymer scaffold to provide structural support to a damaged spinal cord in order to stop tissue from scarring following a serious spinal cord injury. Each plastic unit will be custom produced for a specific location using 3-D printers. More

Illinois governor rejects plastic bag recycling bill
The Associated Press via CBS News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed a bill that would have required Illinois plastic bag manufacturers to set up collection and recycling programs, calling it a "roadblock" for local communities to make their own choices. The proposed law says manufacturers must set up recycling programs with the goal of increasing the recycling rate by 12 percent by 2015 and to eventually make bags from at least 30 percent recycled content. Common metals promise electricity bounty
United Press International    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Less expensive solar technology using common metals could cover America's rooftops and supply a significant part of the country's electricity, scientists say. With enough sunlight falling on home roofs to supply at least half of America's electricity, shingles that generate electricity from the sun and can be installed like traditional roofing could be a source of cheaper and more sustainable solar power, researchers reported.
