Plastics make perfect for Saudi Arabia's global giant
Financial Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a memorable scene from the film The Graduate, a family friend offers the lead character, played by Dustin Hoffman, some simple career advice: "I want to say just one word to you. Just one word. Plastics." It has certainly been a lucrative industry for Saudi Basic Materials Corporation, the state-controlled giant that has emerged as a global player in plastics, chemicals, fertilizers and metals (which are used to make golf clubs), with operations spanning from the U.S. to China. Improved gas-impermeable, transparent food packaging
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An important application of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is in food and beverage packaging. However, its gas-barrier characteristics are insufficient for packaging large-volume products that are sensitive to changes in oxygen and carbon dioxide content. The use of polymer/layered-silicate nanocomposites has been studied extensively in this context. The complete dispersion of layered silicate in a polymer optimizes the number of available reinforcing elements, thus resulting in many improvements (including of the material's gas-barrier properties). US degradable plastic demand shows strong growth, study says
Greener Package    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The degradable plastics industry has been on the verge of commercial success for decades, relates a new study, "Degradable Plastic," from The Freedonia Group, Inc. However, it reports, demand growth was limited because most degradable plastics were too expensive, were unavailable in large enough quantities, or had performance drawbacks that limited them to niche markets. This situation began to change in the early 2000s, as interest in environmentally friendly products gained strength, boosted by the efforts of major users like Walmart. More

How Tessy Plastics in Elbridge, NY, fought its way back from the loss of its major customer
The Syracuse Post-Standard    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tessy Plastics Corp. President Roland Beck had every reason to be feeling good that morning in June 2001 as he drove to work. Business had been good for Tessy, an Elbridge company founded by Beck's father and two partners 28 years earlier. Tessy was making the plastic ink cartridges for Xerox printers. Lots of them. But about two miles before reaching Tessy's plant on Route 5, Beck heard a news report on his car radio that ruined his day and nearly his family's company: Xerox was pulling the plug on its entire line of inkjet printers, a business it had entered just one year earlier. Federal judge won't certify class in plastics antitrust case
The Legal Intelligencer via Law.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nearly $47 million in settlements was struck with seven of the defendants in a suit alleging price-fixing conspiracies in the markets for plastics additives, but the four non-settling defendants have now won a ruling that effectively kills the case. In his 42-page opinion in In re Plastics Additives Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Judge Legrome Davis ruled that the plaintiffs cannot pursue the case as a class action because the theory of their antitrust claims is riddled with fatal flaws. Taiwanese Premier Wu calls for cap-and-trade system
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Taiwan's Premier Wu Den-yih has urged the island's Environmental Protection Administration to plan for the introduction of a cap-and-trade system on greenhouse-gas emissions to help reduce pollution. The EPA should coordinate with lawmakers to facilitate the passage of a proposed law that would set the framework for emissions trading, the Cabinet said in an e-mailed statement in Taipei today. President Ma Ying-jeou, who took office in May 2008, has pledged to cut emissions to 2000 levels by 2025. More
