Superstretchy polymer jelly can take a hit
Nature    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief A hydrogel is a network of polymers that soaks up lots of water to form a jelly-like material. Most shatter easily and don't stretch far without breaking. But a new sophisticated hydrogel made from a mixture of two polymers — alginate and polyacrylamide — is the most resilient yet and could be used in replacement cartilage or scaffolding for artificial organs. Enhancing gas-barrier properties of polymer-clay nanocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The automotive and packaging industries are increasingly demanding high-performance fillers, plastics and composites for novel applications. In addition, incorporating nanoclay fillers into certain polymers has been shown to reduce loss markedly, and there is considerable interest in these materials as both fuel tank and fuel line components for cars. Using nanofillers to prepare nanocomposites with high barrier properties can make it possible to use less material, which will considerably reduce costs. More

Masterbatch method to generate polyethylene graphene oxide nanocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polyolefins are highly prized among commodity plastics owing to their use in a variety of applications. High-density polyethylene in particular has a wide range of properties, including low cost, ease of recycling, good processability, nontoxicity, biocompatibility and good chemical resistance. The demands of modern-day applications, however, are not met solely by neat polymers. Thus, researchers seek to improve the performance of the polymer's stiffness and rigidity by forming composites. Making stretchable electronics
Technology Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief MC10, a startup in Cambridge, Mass., is getting ready to commercialize high-performance electronics that can stretch. The technology could lead to such products as skin patches that monitor whether the wearer is sufficiently hydrated or inflatable balloon catheters equipped with sensors that measure electrical misfiring caused by cardiac arrhythmias. Improved model of molecular bonding
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory via PhysOrg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Material properties and interactions are largely determined by the binding and unbinding of their constituent molecules, but the standard model used to interpret data on the formation and rupturing of molecular bonds suffers from inconsistencies. A collaboration of researchers has developed a first-of-its-kind model for providing a comprehensive description of the way in which molecular bonds form and rupture. More

Circuits so thin they float on water
Cornell University via Futurity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Integrated silicon circuits, present in everything from coffeemakers to computers, are very thin — but researchers think they can push thin-film boundaries to the single-atom level. The material of choice is graphene, single-atom-thick sheets of repeating carbon atoms, and hexagonal boron nitride, similarly thin sheets of repeating boron and nitrogen atoms. More

Building a better world with chemicals
Discover Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When materials scientists look at the periodic table of elements, they don't see a chart full of symbols and numbers; they see a vast molecular pantry that allows a near-infinite number of recipes. Successful raids on this pantry can benefit all of us. Take solar power. In the 113 years between the discovery of the physics behind photovoltaic solar cells and the year 2000, less than 2 gigawatts of solar power capacity was installed around the world. But recent improvements in the molecular structure of the silicon in photovoltaic panels helped bring online more than 10 gigawatts of new solar power in 2011 alone. More

From fish and chips waste oil to medical fibers
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Waste oil from cooking fish and chips and other fried foods makes an excellent feedstock for manufacturing an up-and-coming bioplastic. That's according to a new British research report that eyes use of the plastics in microcapsules for drug delivery in cancer therapy and also as medical implants because of its biodegradability and nontoxic nature. Nanoimprinting technologies for identifying trace amounts of molecules
Cordis via Nanowerk News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers have advanced the frontiers of chemical separation technology. The increased specificity and selectivity regarding identification of biologically relevant molecules should have important impact on biomedicine and environmental science in particular. Imagine a piece of play dough into which an unusual and complicated shape is pressed. Removing the "key" leaves the matching "lock" imprinted on it. This is the basic idea behind an exciting new process called molecular imprinting. More

Bioresorbables at TESco: A look at the future of medical plastics
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
TESco Associates is not your normal plastics injection molding operation. The entire working supply of resin compounds is kept in a smallish room in refrigerated plastic bags that each are valued at thousands of dollars. Every piece of primary and secondary processing equipment is highly customized, often with proprietary modifications. When new equipment is installed, suppliers are told to send only one technician, preferably one the company already knows. This is a boutique, very high-value business. More

US demand for fluoropolymers to hit $2.4 billion
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. demand for fluoropolymers will increase 5.3 percent annually to $2.4 billion in 2016, with volume totaling 198 million pounds, according to a recent study. Polytetrafluoroethylene will continue to be the most popular fluoropolymer. A large part of demand will come from the industrial processing market, as well as emerging applications such as chemical processing and industrial filtration. More

Low salt diet to flush out oil
Chemistry World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
BP has announced the first deployment of a new technology that it says will lead to a "step change" in the amount of oil recovered from reservoirs, as part of a £4.5 billion development in the North Sea. The technique draws on fundamental chemistry research carried out at the company's laboratories to find out what causes oil molecules to stick to rock surfaces. More
