Mechanical characterization of hydrogel
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hydrogels consist of bundles of polymer chains and large pores of interstitial fluid containing up to 99 percent of their weight. They have recently attracted increased attention because of their numerous applications in biomedical and tissue engineering, e.g., for cartilage repair. For these applications, understanding the mechanical behavior of hydrogels is particularly important. Nevertheless, methods to measure the mechanical properties of hydrogels are not well established, since their soft surfaces and the interstitial water render mechanical testing extremely difficult.
