Problems for Russian chemicals?
Chemistry World
Share

The Russian chemical industry could be on the verge of a serious crisis caused by state plans to abolish subsidies to domestic producers. The move follows Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization, which comes with certain obligations. Starting next year, the government will have to cut all the forms of support for the national chemical industry, including the reduced tariffs for gas, electricity and railway transportation.

2-step model to maximize mechanical performance of extruded EPDM weather-strips
SPE Plastics Research Online
Share

Ethylene-propylene-diene elastomers are used in a wide range of applications, including weather-strips in automobiles. To make good quality weather-strips requires several criteria to be met. First, we need to minimize reversion. Second, we need to achieve a high degree of uniformity of mechanical properties throughout a bulky sample. Third, we aim to reduce time needed for curing without a reduction of the final mechanical properties.

Improving the thermal properties of organic-inorganic nanocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online
Share

In recent years, there has been much interest in organic-inorganic composites formed with mineral fillers because they often exhibit spectacular properties. Nanoscale fillers, including montmorillonite, silica, calcium carbonate and aluminum oxide, are reported to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties — such as toughness, stiffness and heat resistance — of polymers.

Dow Chemical tops estimates as shale gas lifts US plastics
Bloomberg
Share

Dow Chemical Co., the chemical producer eliminating 2,400 jobs to cope with a slowing economy, reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings as volumes rose and plastics output benefited from low-cost natural gas. Net income fell 35 percent to $582 million, or 42 cents a share, from $900 million, or 69 cents, a year earlier, Dow said in a statement.

Blue Competence, the sustainability initiative launched three years ago by the VDMA German Engineering Federation is now also supported by the plastics and rubber machinery manufacturers association. With nearly 40 machinery companies in the sector having already joined the initiative, it seems clear that sustainability, albeit blue instead of green, has struck a chord in the machinery sector.

Branching into more materials, NextLife opens recycling plant in Arkansas
Plastics News
Share

Plastics recycler and resin manufacturer NextLife Enterprise has opened a second reprocessing plant. But unlike its plant in Frankfort, Ky., this won't be devoted exclusively to plastics recycling. The new $10 million plant in Rogers, Ark., will recycle plastics, metal, aluminum, glass and corrugated. Only about 20-25 percent of the material recycled at the 260,000-square-foot plant will be plastics, said Ron Whaley, president and CEO of NextLife.

A passion for plastic that breaks the mould
Financial Times
Share

Nick Stillwell's revolutionary engineered-plastics technology was born of sheer desperation. It was 2008, the global economy had nosedived and orders at Stillwell's company Protomax Plastics had dried up overnight. Protomax had been manufacturing an extrusion machine that produced 95 kilos of engineered plastic an hour against an industry standard of 25 kilos. When the recession killed sales, Stillwell, 44, decided to design a machine to make an innovative plastic panel to compete with the plywood products on the market.

Nano-reinforced plastics improve friction resistance of orthodontics
The Medical News
Share

Brackets made from clear plastic polymer used in dental correction orthodontics have produced very good results in recent years, especially in relation to the improved esthetics when compared to metal brackets, but they do present certain problems of wear and tear within the mouth. The solution researchers came up with is to use very hard alumina nanoparticles and spread them evenly in the polysulfone, the polymer mould used in the industrial production of the brackets.

Prescription nanoreactors
Chemistry World
Share

Scientists in Switzerland have developed a nanoreactor that can synthesize and release the antibiotic cephalexin, which is used to treat bacterial infections. Lowering the drug dose required to effectively treat a patient would save money and reduce side effects. To achieve this, one area of research is focusing on using a "prodrug" approach in which less toxic substrates, or prodrugs, are given to a patient and are converted to the active drug form by an enzyme only at a specific site.

A new video-article in the Journal of Visualized Experiments, details the use of a new laser-activated bio-adhesive polymer. The chitosan-based polymer, SurgiLux, was developed by scientists at the University of New South Wales. Chitosan is a polymer derived from chitin, which is found in fungal cell walls or in exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects.

Used tires and plastics become oil
Hybrid Cars
Share

How would you like to power or lubricate your car with your old tires? It looks like your used tires and various old plastics are becoming a reliable source of oil. Green EnviroTech Holdings Corp. has announced the tire-and-plastic-to-oil samples that were approved in May precipitated the pricing at the "Brent Crude" spot price. In laymen's term, this approval contributed to confirm the viability of the company's recycling and transformation process.
