SPE HIGHLIGHTS

Rheology and crystallization of polyethylene/organoclay nanocomposite films
SPE Plastics Research Online
Polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention for their potential applications in agricultural and packaging films, automobile manufacturing, and construction. But the dramatic improvements in physical-mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties that appear with small amounts of inorganic layered silicate depend on the microstructure of these polymer/organoclay systems, and this is not well understood.

Plastic bag charge or ban 'could cut use in Europe by 80 percent'
    The Guardian
European Union member states could cut their plastic bag use by 80 percent, the European commission has said, by charging for bags or even banning them. Plastic bags are a major cause of seaborne pollution, which is a serious hazard for marine life, and some regions have already moved to cut their use through charging.

Plastic tanks catch on in wine industry
    The Press Democrat
Like many winemakers, Mitch Black scrambled to find a place to store his wine last year when the largest grape crop in California history unleashed a flood of wine. Companies that make wooden barrels and steel tanks couldn't churn them out them fast enough to meet demand from wineries and growers, like Black, who were looking for a place to put their juice. So Black, along with a growing number of winemakers in California, turned to plastic containers to ferment and store his valuable crop.

Supramolecular polymers — possible biomaterial for artificial human parts
    Phys.Org
EU researchers are on the way to making parts of a bioartificial kidney out of a novel polymer — which could reduce the risk of transplants being rejected by the human body. Biomaterials can be inserted in the human body to replace or support a biological function, allowing patients to live longer. However, their use is still limited because they fail to fully integrate with living cells and tissues, leading to possible rejection.
