Global science: Climbing mount publishable

Twenty years ago North America, Europe and Japan produced almost all of the world's science. However, all good things, though, come to an end, and the reign of these scientific aristos is starting to look shaky. In 1990 they carried out more than 95 percent of the world's research and development. By 2007 that figure was 76 percent. Such, at least, is the conclusion of the latest report from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO. More

US chemicals, plastics shed jobs as overall October employment improves

The U.S. chemicals and plastics sectors shed jobs in October, the U.S. Labor Department said recently, even as total non-farm employment moved higher and unemployment held steady. Employment in chemical manufacturing dropped to a seasonally-adjusted 776,000 positions in October, down 0.3 percent from 778,000 in September. More

Sita to turn plastic into diesel to power vehicles

Sita, the waste company owned by the £6bn French utility Suez Environment, will unveil plans to build up to 10 plants, creating 120 jobs and costing an estimated £50m. The first, likely to be located in the London area, will convert so-called "end of life" plastics back into oil-based fuel. This is the dregs of plastic waste contaminated by food stuffs, which ordinarily ends up at landfill because it cannot be recycled. More

The Canadian Plastics Industry Association used the recent K 2010 show Dusseldorf, Germany to expose Canadian participants to some of the leading post-use plastic recovery technologies in the world. The CPIA's three-day "Technology Transfer Mission" involved a tour of plastic recycling exhibitor booths at the show, followed by two days spent touring local municipal energy recovery facilities and recycling plants. Berry Plastics may sell debt as rates plummet

Berry Plastics Corp, the container maker owned by Apollo Global Management LLC and Graham Partners Inc., is marketing debt as borrowing costs plunge. Berry Plastics may sell $800 million of 10-year notes and use proceeds to repay debt maturing in 2014, according to a person familiar with the offering. The debt may be sold this week, said the person, who declined to be identified because terms aren't set. More
