Medical device market trends and the headwinds of change
By Don Rosato
The term "medical device" can be applied to a wide range of products. The global market is in the $140 billion-plus range and is comprised of about 8,000 types of medical devices, ranging from simple bandages and spectacles to the most sophisticated diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive surgery equipment. More than half of the leading global medical device companies are based in the U.S., and the U.S. medical plastics market is expected to reach 4.4 billion pounds by 2015, growing at a compound annual growth rate of about 5 percent. So what is driving this continued growth?

Measuring the concentration of phthalate plasticizers in poly(vinyl chloride)
SPE Plastics Research Online
Poly(vinyl chloride) became one of the most useful materials known today after Waldo Lonsbury Semon's discovery of plasticization in 1926. The use of plasticizers as such, however, began in the mid-1860s when castor oil was added to soften cellulose nitrate. Plasticized PVC is used in food packaging, shoes, furniture, cars, toys, medical devices, clothing, plumbing, tool handles, and many other applications.

    Dow Chemical launches makeover
    The Wall Street Journal
Dow Chemical Co. plans to shed at least $5 billion worth of low-margin businesses, including the products that sparked its creation more than a century ago. If the largest U.S. chemical maker by revenue succeeds in selling or spinning off almost 10 percent of its business, Dow might consider dropping "Chemical" from the name it has used since 1897, Chairman and Chief Executive Andrew Liveris said.

IBM Research engineers a ninja polymer that kills deadly bacteria like MRSA
    Geek
As humanity continues to carpet bomb the microscopic world with antibiotics, the enemy is fighting back. Antibiotic resistance is on the rise, and that can mean painful or life-threatening infections for those unfortunate enough to come into contact with such organisms. One of the most common resistant bacteria is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, but researchers at IBM are working on a potential treatment that relies on polymers instead of drugs.

  • Turning vapors into foam-like polymer coatings
    The Almagest
Polymers — the essential component of plastics — are found in countless commercial, medical, and industrial products. Polymers that are porous are called foam polymers and are especially useful because they combine light weight with rigid mechanical properties. Now a researcher at the University of Rochester has developed a process to grow highly customizable coatings of foam-like polymers.

Denimite repurposes blue jeans into a "green" material
    Gizmag
As evidenced by our friend carbon fiber, composite materials get a big boost in strength when fibers are part of the recipe. Examples include composites made with plastic, wood pulp, and flax fibers. Husband-and-wife design team Jen Carlson and Josh Shear have taken this concept to a funky new level, by using shredded old blue jeans to create a denim fiber composite known as Denimite. Along with the recycled jeans, Denimite also consists of a partially bio-based thermoset resin, that contains no volatile organic compounds.
