Medical device plastic material innovations to watch
By Don Rosato
The medical device universe encompasses a particularly imposing spectrum of constant technological innovation, including hundreds of different technologies and thousands of types of products. This affords high-performance specialty plastics material suppliers unique opportunities in medical device market development. High-purity medical plastics, and more specifically high-purity medical thermoplastic vulcanizates, are a good example. There's a growing focus on extractables in healthcare supplies and equipment as concerns grow about endocrine disruption and other health issues.

Water-assisted melt mixing and solid-state polymerization of PET/clay nanocomposites
SPE Plastics Research Online
Polyethylene terephthalate, a low-cost engineering polymer, is employed in a range of applications due to its excellent transparency and good barrier properties. Recent studies have shown that the presence of organoclay platelets in PET can lower its permeability to oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Novel morphing material, when heated, changes shape in a predetermined pattern
    AZoM
Heating a sheet of plastic may not bring it to life – but it sure looks like it does in new experiments at Rice University. A composite material created by scientists at Rice changes shape in a predetermined pattern when heated and changes back when cooled. The morphing material may be useful for bioengineering, optical, pharmaceutical and other applications. The materials created by Rice polymer scientist Rafael Verduzco and his colleagues start as flat slabs, but they morph into shapes that can be controlled by patterns written into their layers.
