Dale Denham to speak at THE Show of the South

HanesBrand to make new acquisitions a priority following Maidenform purchase

Apparel basics manufacturer HanesBrands, Winston-Salem, N.C., is in the market for new companies to acquire in order to sustain its growth. "It is time to turn our attention to the next priority: acquisitions," Richard Noll, CEO of HanesBrands, said on a recent investors' call. The company best known for its line of T-shirts saw net sales for the year increase 2 percent to $4.63 billion in 2013, with a 12 percent increase in the fourth quarter attributed in part to HanesBrands' acquisition of Maidenform, which was completed in October for $583 million.

Quad/Graphics CEO vows to keep fighting bulk mailing increases

A bill seeking to increase bulk mailing postal rates isn't setting well with commercial and specialty printer Quad/Graphics Inc., especially at a time when the printing industry is at a tipping point, said CEO Joel Quadracci. In 2013, Sussex, Wis., -based Quad co-mailed about 5 billion magazines, catalogs and letter-size mail pieces. During the earnings call on Feb. 27, Quadracci told analysts that the 6 percent U.S. Postal Service increase that went into effect on Jan. 26 included a 4.3 percent emergency increase.

Treasury budget would focus on IRS, small businesses, underserved areas

The White House’s proposed 2015 budget would provide $13.8 billion to the Treasury Department, representing a slight downgrade of about 1.6 percent compared to the spending level for this year. The budget blueprint also calls for $1.5 billion to help spur lending for small businesses, $225 million for a fund to encourage job growth and healthier communities in underserved areas and plans for assessing the production and use of coins, including the penny.

Behold: A business card that plays Tetris

Lots of people have business cards, but most cards are unfortunately kind of forgettable. Not this business card, though — this one is more likely to be a time sink, thanks to the playable Tetris it features. The card belongs to Kevin Bateske, and it can be played for up to ten hours. He used an Arduino board and an OLED display, and he's hoping to raise money to sell cards with similar interactive capacities according to his website.
