First, cool is a social perception, not an inherent quality. So, the Pabst Brewing Company (PBR) has always been PBR, but it wasn't cool until Portland hipsters embraced it. Second, coolness is relative.

Minneapolis firm Made takes promotional products to a new level

If you’ve ever sipped from a can in a logo’d coozie, flung a corporate-branded Frisbee or pocketed a promotional pen, then the owners of Made have a message for you: Custom products don’t have to be cheap junk. Companies spend upwards of $15 billion a year to get their names in the hands of consumers via promotional giveaway items. But too many of them are missing an opportunity to connect in a more sophisticated way, say Michelle Courtright and Kristin Hollander, co-founders of Made, a Minneapolis custom-products agency.

Clearly the brand is doing something right — it has 11,904 followers and counting, and receives 45 followers and 500 likes per post on average. And that's even for product previews that offer a look at new designs but no launch date or any other details.

Fresh Brewed Tees took some heat for revealing their new "FOR6IVEN" design in anticipation of LeBron James' return. Now, the Cleveland-based T-shirt company is having the last laugh. Tony Madalone, Cleveland native and owner of Fresh Brewed Tees, starting prepping for the idea of a LeBron James return not long ago. That's when he and a colleague came up with the "FOR6IVEN" design, that spells "forgiven" with a "6."

Congress considering bill to ban BPA from food packaging

Legislation has been introduced by Democrats in both chambers of Congress to ban Bisephenol-A (BPA) from food packaging. BPA creates what is known as EA or estrogenic activity in the body, which occurs when chemicals mimic the behavior of naturally occurring estrogen. Studies have shown that fetal, infant, and juvenile mammals have been shown to be especially sensitive to the low doses of these reactive chemicals, which have been linked to an increased risk of breast and prostate cancer, fetal development problems, heart disease, diabetes, and infertility.

How to find out what typeface a website uses

Way back when, if you wanted to know what typefaces a website used, you'd have to view the page's source code. Now all it takes is a browser extension. The best two are Type Sample (for Chrome only) and Whatfont (for Chrome and Safari). Whatfont is best if you just want to know the typeface but don't particularly care about saving it. Just click on the browser extension's button, hover over text, and the name of the typeface pops up. If you click, you'll get details, such as size, line height, and sample text.

Big brands close factories in Bangladesh due to safety concerns

A North American-led group of fast fashion brands operating in Bangladesh that it had closed or partially shut seven factories for remediation after inspectors found structural problems and safety concerns. The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety — which includes 26 big brands such as Walmart, Hudson’s Bay Company, The Gap, Canadian Tire and The Children’s Place — said it will extend compensation to workers for up to four months if they are unable to work due to the closures.
