The $23,000 T-shirt: Teaching copyright in today's social media culture
PBS
How much is a T-shirt or a tweet worth? Two copyright cases, separated by nearly 30 years, should reinforce our need as educators to teach copyright as a practical matter as much as a conceptual one. When it comes to working with students, we should approach copyright from two protective angles. One is to ensure that students don’t stray across copyright laws and willfully or accidentally infringe on a creator’s rights. The second is to ensure a full understanding of how to protect their own works.

Mets give fan Phillies promotional truck
ESPN
Mere seconds after New York Mets fan Steven Mitzmacher walked through the gate and got his truck, he realized the promotional giveaway had the logo of the team's hated division rival, the Philadelphia Phillies. "I looked down, and I said to my brother-in-law, 'What's this?'" Mitzmacher said. The truck, which was given away at the game against the San Francisco Giants, also featured the logo of W.B. Mason, the office supplies company that sponsors both the Mets and the Phillies.

An inside look at a bold rebranding of the USPS
Wired
The post office has an awful reputation. Seriously: On Seinfeld, Newman works there. The United States Postal Service is aware of this, which is likely one reason why they commissioned New York-based creative agency GrandArmy to redesign their signage and packaging last year. Most of the work (“90 percent,” says GrandArmy co-founder Eric Collins) was implemented across the postal service’s 31,000 locations last August, but it wasn’t until this month that designers published the full breadth of their work online.

Why you should doodle more
Fast Co Design
Doodling, long frowned upon as a symptom of boredom or inattention, may be a more productive use of your time than previously contended. Recent scientific research indicates that seemingly absent-minded tracings can help the brain process and retain information and solve problems. According to the Wall Street Journal, "some researchers suspect doodling may help the brain remain active by engaging its "default networks" — regions that maintain a baseline of activity in the cerebral cortex when outside stimuli are absent, a 2011 Lancet study says."

Promo Marketing
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)recently reported that Star Networks USA has agreed to a voluntary recall of its Magnicube Sphere and Magnicube Cube products. The recall was the result of a case filed by the CPSC in 2012 over the safety of the magnets. Said the CPSC in its recall notice: "From 2009 to the present, CPSC staff has received numerous incident reports of ingestions involving small, high-powered magnets, including many that required surgery. This recall is intended to protect children and teenagers from the deadly risk of injury that can occur when more than one magnet is ingested."
