Don't just showcase your products, create an experience
Small Business Trends
When creating a local business, you can choose a couple of different paths. You can go the safe route and use inexpensive but practical displays to show off items. Or you can create an all-encompassing experience.
That’s the dilemma that faced Johnny Earle, CEO of Johnny Cupcakes. The company sells designer clothing not baked goods. So when Earle relocated his store to an upscale part of Boston in 2005, he chose to create an experience around his brand’s unusual name. And that decision, according to Earle, has made all the difference.

T-shirt company under fire for selling pro-eating disorder merchandise
"Beautiful," "alluring" and "graceful" are not words usually associated with eating disorders — serious, life-threatening illnesses that impact millions of people every year in the United States.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of about 2.3 million promotional toys distributed by McDonald's in its Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals. The toys — Hello Kitty-themed whistles — feature detachable components that could pose a choking hazard to young children, according to the CPSC's recall notice. Another 200,000 units distributed in Canada were also recalled.
How to make 'free shipping' profitable
Offering free shipping will improve your conversion rate. Guaranteed! But, it also can kill your profit margins if you’re not careful.
So, how do you make free shipping profitable?
Here are four simple tests that any e-commerce store owner can run to maximize profits on a free shipping offer. If you do this right, you can see 15-30 percent improvement in net profit (not just conversion).
Marketers: It's time to own the sales funnel
Sales and marketing teams both have helped break down the sales process by perpetuating leads from poor-quality customers who will never buy anything.
Sales teams often dump erroneous information into the customer relationship management system without running it through marketing software to scrub the data for authenticity and other data problems. But marketers, too, have been known to pass leads on to sales departments without knowing whether they are prospects who are ready to buy.
Strategies: Secrets to ringing up more holiday sales
What's at the top of every small business owner's holiday wish list? More sales! It's no wonder. For many small businesses, the holidays are their make-or-break season, often bringing in half their total annual income.
Holiday sales are critical for more than just retail or e-commerce companies — small businesses in personal services, hospitality, travel, even many business-to-business industries depend on the holidays to make their year.
