The Tchotchke is alive and well... and thriving

Recently PPAI President Paul Bellantone had the opportunity to respond to a lighthearted blog post by Todd Wilms, SAP Head of Social Business Strategy, on "The Sad Death of the Beloved Tchotchke." Although humorous in nature, Bellantone takes this type of commentary seriously. On behalf of our “beloved tchotchke”, this was his rebuttal. Bellantons presents a somewhat different view of promotional products — perhaps one never considered — in support of the ‘beloved tchotchke,’ a.k.a. the promotional product.

Gildan stretches apparel mix, wins worldwide rights to camouflage 'lifestyle brand'

Gildan Activewear Inc. is going full camo. The Montreal-based manufacturer of T-shirts, socks, underwear and other basics says it has obtained the worldwide license for the Mossy Oak hunting camouflage wear brand. The company, which announced record fourth-quarter results on robust growth in sales and lower cotton costs and also hiked its dividend 20 percent, says it sees big potential in marketing Mossy Oak camouflage activewear, underwear and socks.

How many online retailers would have to collect sales taxes under Senate bill?

How many businesses would be hurt if Congress allows states to force Internet retailers in other states to collect sales taxes on purchases made by their residents? Around 1,800, according to a new report from the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy. That's assuming that businesses with less than $1 million in remote sales are exempted from out-of-state sales tax collection requirements.

'Showrooming' affecting US retail sales

Six percent of recent U.S. retail shoppers indicated they "showroomed" in early November — meaning they examined merchandise in a traditional brick-and-mortar retail store, but made the purchase online instead. Another 3 percent say they intend to buy the merchandise online. In other words, brick-and-mortar stores may be losing nearly one customer in 10 to showrooming.
