Gov. Perry activates secret border violence plan
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texas Gov. Rick Perry has activated a secret spillover violence contingency plan, citing an increasing threat of violence crossing the Texas border from Mexico. Perry's office said details of the plan, activated Tuesday, wouldn't be released because of security concerns. However, Perry said that, "With the growing threat of violence in Mexico spilling over the border, we have taken important measures to increase the law enforcement presence along the Texas border and have placed additional resources on standby to combat any potential situation." Gov. Rick Perry will be in Fort Worth on Friday to formally present the family of Tim Cole with a posthumous pardon he granted the wrongfully convicted inmate this month. Women homebuilders raising roofs in Dallas area
The Dallas Morning News via TXCN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Diane Cheatham still remembers the first time she walked onto a home building project. "The first job I walked on in 1980, the contractor looked at me and said it was bad luck to have a woman on a job site," said Cheatham, who has run Urban Edge Developers Ltd., a custom building company, since 1991. "Things have changed greatly since then." Cheatham, who builds townhouse projects and has her own subdivision in North Dallas, is one of a growing number of women in what has traditionally been a boys' club of a business. More

White's board seat falls on a fine line
The Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Former Houston Mayor Bill White's service on the board of an oil field services company now facing a congressional inquiry is not illegal, but it is unusual. A Houston Chronicle review of the personal financial disclosure statements for more than a dozen state and local officials found half listing service on company boards, but most of those were family-run businesses, mostly involving ranching or real estate. Only White and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert showed up as serving as directors of major corporations. More

Galveston to open bids on dike repairs
The Galveston County Daily News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Ringer admitted he saw the sign that said the Texas City Dike was closed. He admitted he was riding on the Hurricane Ike-damaged road last fall when four police arrived and gave him a ticket. Unfortunately for Ringer and the thousands of others who complain the 5-mile-long pier, closed since Hurricane Ike wrecked it, should reopen sooner rather than later, the dike still is closed and still off limits to the public. But there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. More
