U.S. home sales rise 9.4 percent in September
The Dallas Morning News Share
Home resales rose in September to the highest level in more than two years, beating expectations, as buyers scrambled to complete their purchases before a tax credit for first-time owners expires. The National Association of Realtors said that sales rose 9.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.57 million in September, from a downwardly revised
pace of 5.1 million in August. MORE
Gov. Perry promotes Texas in the Big Apple
The Austin American Statesman Postcards Blog Share
Gov. Rick Perry is in New York City to promote Texas as a business and relocation
destination. Perry, who is facing a GOP primary battle in March against U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Debra Medina, is being accompanied on the New York trip by Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and DeSoto Mayor Bobby Waddle. More
Groups call for balance in labor, immigration laws
The Associated Press via The Fort Worth Star Telegram Share
Workplace immigration raids during the Bush administration interfered with ongoing labor investigations and allowed employers to exploit workers who complained about conditions on the job, labor groups said in a new report. The stepped-up immigration enforcement came at the expense of rigorous enforcement of labor protections that are guaranteed to all workers
regardless of immigration status, the groups said. More
Housing group alleges bias by town of Sunnyvale
The Dallas Morning News Share
The Inclusive Communities Project, a Dallas fair housing agency, has filed court documents against the town of Sunnyvale, citing a failure to live up to a 2005 agreement and discriminatory practices the plaintiffs say date to the town's incorporation. The action marks the latest salvo by
plaintiffs in a legal battle that has dragged on for more than 20 years over the right to develop affordable housing in Sunnyvale, a rural enclave of mostly upper-end homes in eastern Dallas County. More
Hutchison absenteeism not much of an advantage to Perry
The Dallas Morning News Share
Rick Perry has made it a habit to ding Kay Bailey Hutchison each time she misses a vote in the Senate. He began back in February, months before she even had formally announced her campaign for governor, blasting her over a missed procedural vote on a stimulus plan. "I don't think the election's going to be won or lost based on this specific attack," said Nathan Gonzales, political editor at The Rothenberg Political Report, a nonpartisan
newsletter. But "the Perry campaign strategy is, 'Attack anywhere and everywhere on anything.'" More
Housing lacking for Fort Bliss influx
El Paso Times Share
Few of the 8,000 apartments Fort Bliss officials say are needed for new soldiers have been built, putting El Paso in what a city planner called "a state of urgency" for military housing. The city announced last spring that the apartments were necessary to help accommodate the 22,000 soldiers already stationed at Fort Bliss and 12,000 others who will arrive by
2013. More

Perry, Hutchison slug it out on Web
The Dallas Morning News Share
A bruising political battle like the one between Gov. Rick Perry and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison usually means a slew of tough television ads. But for now, the candidates are saving their barbs for the Web. Perry online ads depict Hutchison as a free-wheeling liberal spender in Washington, while Hutchison features Perry aiding the
community-activist group ACORN, a favorite GOP target. More
Perry-Hutchison fight may cause major fallout in GOP
The Fort Worth Star Telegram Share
Texas Democrats watching the state's top two Republicans fight for their
party's gubernatorial nomination are glad that Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison have apparently abandoned the Republicans' 11th Commandment, established during Ronald Reagan's run for California governor in 1966: Thou shall not speak ill of another Republican. More

Where Hutchison's wealth comes from
The Associated Press via The Fort Worth Star Telegram Share
U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison would have to take a pay cut if elected governor, but her husband's income, a multimillion dollar investment portfolio and other
assets have already contributed to significant family wealth. Hutchison's husband, Ray, a prominent Dallas bond attorney, makes a little under a half million dollars a year in combined salary and deferred compensation, records provided by her campaign show. More
