Texans more optimistic than others about economy, survey says
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texans are more optimistic about their finances and local business conditions than Americans as a whole, but many are postponing significant purchases and taking money out of savings to meet expenses, according to a new Citi survey. And most Texans are feeling confident about the housing market, with 82 percent of those surveyed expecting home values in the Lone Star State to rise or stay the same over the next 12 months. MORE

The figure means that one of every 385 homes received a foreclosure notice in October. More
Texas motorists could face higher fuel taxes
The Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some legislators concerned about how to pay for new highways in Texas have suggested considering an increase in the 20 cents-a-gallon state fuel tax. Members of the Texas Senate Transportation Committee, who convened in El Paso on Tuesday, said money is lacking to build new roads. "We are in the critical position in this state where we are growing and will need more roads," said the committee chairman, state Sen. John Carona, a Dallas Republican. "But we have no money to build them and no more debt that we can issue." More

Wood and metal get a second life in efficient prefabricated homes
The Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The stretch of U.S. 183 in East Austin is particularly nondescript, save for the presence of Callahan's General Store, a 7,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and a 336-square-foot home set back from the road and on subtle display. "Our offices are back there," says Tracen Gardner, co-founder of Reclaimed Space, the prefabrication construction company responsible for the home, pointing to the somber factory. "Let's meet in the house." More

DHS moves forward with border fence through orchard and man's heart
The Brownsville Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s removal of more than 70 grapefruit trees from land that was once part of an orchard was the latest blow to Leonard Loop's heart. Members of the Loop family watched helplessly as a government contractor’s large yellow Caterpillar excavator began the process of removing the trees. The trees were removed to make way for the border wall, which is being built by the Kiewit Corporation for the DHS. More
War of words over Forensic Science Commission testimomy
The Austin American-Statesman Postcards Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A war or words is raging between the current and former chairs of the Texas Forensic Science Commission over whether the panel is moving fast enough to resolve a politically charged controversy over arson-investigation methods. Austin attorney Sam Bassett, the commission chair who Gov. Rick Perry abruptly replaced earlier this fall, fired the first volley with a statement that challenged testimony at a Senate committee hearing by the current chair, Williamson County DA John Bradley. Perry encounters string of setbacks
El Paso Times    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What should be Gov. Rick Perry's time to shine and shore up support for an unprecedented third term has turned lately into a series of missteps and accidents that are rare for such an experienced politician. Whether they are coincidences, a show of uncharacteristic sloppiness by the Perry campaign or spin from the opposition, they seem to have given at least a temporary boost to challenger U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, whose aides note every Perry setback. More
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison backs term limits for senate
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Three-term Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has thrown her support behind a constitutional amendment that would cap Senate service at two terms. The stance echoes her argument that Texas governors should also face term limits and that Gov. Rick Perry, in particular, has served too long already. But it contradicts her own career. More
Perry says Obama taking U.S. toward socialism
The Austin American-Statesman Firt Reading Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Rick Perry had some pretty strong comments about the Obama administration on Wednesday in Midland, saying, "This is an administration hell-bent on taking America towards a socialist country." The first part of Perry's remarks focused on the Alien Transfer and Exit Program, something that he has been talking about for more than a week. But there's more to the program than Perry described. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Rick Perry has been campaigning against Washington, and Washington is returning the favor - no endorsements here. In the back and forth between Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and Perry over gubernatorial endorsements, it's no contest when it comes to the Texas congressional delegation: It's Hutchison 10 and Perry 0. More
