Report: Nearly 10 percent of Texans running late on home loans

Almost 10 percent of Texans were behind in
their home loan payments during the third quarter. And about 2 percent of the state's mortgage holders were in foreclosure at the end of September, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported. The number of Texans behind on home loan payments has risen by more than one percentage point in the last year. More

Home resales far exceeded expectations last month, surging to the highest level in 2 1/2 years as first-time buyers rushed to take advantage of an expiring tax credit. The National Association of Realtors says sales rose 10.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.1 million in October, from a downwardly revised pace of 5.54 million in September.

In tough market, training opens doors - and there's money for it

The need is growing: The national unemployment rate was 10.2 percent last month, a 25-year high, and economists say the job market will lag behind the overall economic recovery. And there is money available to help pay for the training: This year, Texas was allotted $51 million from a federal program designed to help laid-off workers upgrade their skills so they can find jobs in high-growth industries such as health care.

Economists expect the joblessness that has weighed down the nation's economic recovery will start to slowly abate in 2010, but they predict consumers will continue to keep a tight rein on spending, according to a new survey. While signs have pointed to the end of the recession, joblessness remains rampant. The national unemployment rate jumped to 10.2 percent in October, the
highest in 26 years. About 9 million people currently receive unemployment benefits.

The Tarrant Regional Water District still believes that it will prevail in its legal fight to obtain water from Oklahoma, but that road became more difficult last week after a federal judge dismissed portions of the lawsuit. While district officials remain optimistic that they can move forward, their battle, at the very least, has become longer.

his candidacy and urged his former rivals to embrace White as the Democratic Party's consensus candidate. The remaining Democratic contenders in the 2010 governor's race, however, all rebuffed Schieffer's suggestion and vowed to press ahead with their campaigns.
