Even a holiday gift from Uncle Sam couldn't brighten the homebuilders' outlook in December. The National Association of Home Builders said its housing market index fell by one point to 16 this month, reflecting concern that job losses and a slow economic recovery will continue to stifle demand for new homes despite the extension of a federal tax credit for buyers.

he number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week as the recovery of the
nation's battered labor market proceeds in fits and starts. The Labor Department said that the number of new jobless claims rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week. That was a worse performance than the decline to 465,000 that economists had expected.

New U.S. construction starts in November dropped 9 percent from October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $405 billion, as the weak economy took its toll on funding for for both private and public projects, according to a report by McGraw-Hill Construction.

Panhandle neighborhood where a fiery Nov. 5 natural gas explosion left three people hurt. El Paso Corp. spokesman Robert Newberry said Thursday that the updated line in the Bushland area will be "400, 600 feet away from any residence."
