Farmers Insurance, state agree to cut 'excessive' rate hike
Dallas Morning News
Share

Jan. 12, 2010 issue:Farmers Insurance agreed to scale back a double-digit rate hike for homeowners coverage in Texas. But the company will get to keep millions of dollars it has collected the past six months, even though the state declared those premiums excessive. Farmers, one of the largest insurers in Texas, had proposed a statewide increase of 10 percent in June. The company said the rates were necessary because of
increased property losses and a jump in the cost of reinsurance which insurers buy to help pay claims after a catastrophic event such as a hurricane.

Crews try to save endangered San Antonio homes
Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Jan. 26, 2010 issue: Construction crews moved dirt to shore up a group of houses precariously perched on a crumbling hill in San Antonio as engineers tried to determine why the land below was shifting, causing dozens of homes to evacuate. Gaping crevices, some 15 feet deep, cut across several yards as dirt cascaded into a towering stone retaining wall that nearly split in half. One soil expert said the cause of the landslide
appeared to be the result of poor retaining wall design, and a city official said the nearly 1,000-foot-long wall in the upper-middle class neighborhood of sprawling two-story homes was built without a permit.

Jan. 28, 2010 issue: Homeowners from the Hills at Rivermist subdivision in San Antonio told lawmakers they and other Texas home buyers need protection from home builders. They say the re-sale value of their property is badly damaged, even though their homes are fine. They're considering suing the builder to make up the difference. But when Jim Coultress
and many of his neighbors bought their new homes they agreed not to sue. Instead, they promised to use private arbitration to settle future any disputes with the home builder.

consumer lawsuit against the builder "jackpot justice." Anthony Holm is a spokesman for Perry Homes and major political contributor Bob Perry. Holm calls the award to Robert and Jane Cull of Mansfield "equivalent to every single resident in Texas depositing $2 into the lawyer's bank account" and said it would be appealed.

Lone Star: Why Texas is doing so much better economically than the rest of the nation
Slate

April 20, 2010 issue: Once a separate nation, Texas has recently been behaving more like an independent economic republic than a regular state. While it hasn't been immune to the problems
plaguing the nation, the Texas housing market, employment rate, and overall economic growth are relatively strong. Chalk some of this up to accidents of geology and geography. But Texan prosperity also reflects the conscious efforts of a once-parochial place to embrace globalization.

Construction expert has plan for containing the gulf oil leak, but can't get anybody to listen
The Brownsville Herald

June 8, 2010 issue: Thousands of ideas have been submitted to BP and the U.S. government for solving the Gulf oil spill crisis, and it's likely the vast majority of them are worthless. But what about those that might actually be feasible that might actually work? While BP has been actively soliciting suggestions from every quarter, it's not clear
the company is capable of recognizing a good idea if it sees it, considering the sheer volume it has to sift through. Whatever the case, Danny Davis is wondering why he hasn't already been called in to deal with the Gulf catastrophe, the worst oil spill disaster in U.S. history.

Housing shortage is feared once economy picks up

June 15, 2010 issue: While the nation begins to walk away from the worst housing crash since the Great Depression, it can be hard to believe or accept a housing shortage could now be on its way.
"It is ironic, but there is a growing consensus that there may be a new housing shortage coming," James Gaines, a real estate economist with Texas A&M, told CNN Money. Only 672,000 new homes were started in April, which is less than half of the long-term run rate that's needed in order to keep up with the nation’s population growth.

Hang in there, says economist for homebuilders group
Dallas Morning News

Oct. 19, 2010 issue: Top home building economist David Crowe looked pretty relaxed during his visit to North Texas. Crowe, who was in Grapevine to speak to Texas home builders, was in what's
definitely the strongest housing market in the country. "I don't think I'll get any tomatoes thrown at me today," said Crowe, chief economist with the National Association of Home Builders. "Be thankful you are in Texas and not in Michigan or southern Florida. Your housing market has not suffered nearly as much as many areas of the country."
