New program is making success old hat

The sign of potential for the Clear Springs girls basketball program first materialized two years ago. In 2009, the Chargers were paired up against Fort Bend Bush—a dangerous team featuring future Kansas forward Carolyn Davis—in the first round of the Class 5A Region III playoffs. Expectations weren't high for the Chargers, who were in only their second season of existence and first in varsity. Yet despite the inexperience, the team managed to upend the Broncos 61-52 to advance to the area round. And although Clear Springs quickly lost to North Shore, Mileka Loydrake, then a sophomore, realized the first-round victory signified the beginning of something promising.More

The Wagner Thunderbirds admitted they lacked intensity in their regional semifinal win over Harlingen South. For the Region IV-5A final, the Thunderbirds took a simple strategy to refocus: Treat the Corpus Christi King Mustangs like the Jay Mustangs. The approach worked perfectly. Wagner had the same fire it showed last week against Jay and the defense to match, shutting down King 45-33 at the UTSA Convocation Center and booking the school's second trip to the Class 5A state tournament in four years. 'Sandwich' defense helps LBJ girls reach state tournament

Defense was the order of the day, and coach Renee Brown is going to the tournament for the first time in her 18 years with the Jaguars.
