Aubrey Hires State's Winningest Coach G.A. Moore

G.A. Moore, holder of the Texas record for most career wins by a high school football coach, has agreed to emerge from retirement to coach at Aubrey High School. The Aubrey school board voted unanimously to approve a two-year, $100,000 contract with Moore, 70, to coach the Class 2A Chaparrals and serve as the school's boys' sports coordinator. More

Study Links Fitness to Academic, Behavioral Improvement in Texas Students

Texas students who are physically fit are more likely to do well on achievement tests and less likely to have disciplinary problems, according to a study released Monday by the Texas Education Agency. Based on annual physical fitness assessments of more than 2.4 million students in the public schools, the study found that increased exercise enhances the ability to learn, as evidenced by the higher scores of physically fit children on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.

Westlake Hires Permian's Allman as New Football Coach

Westlake High School's new football coach comes to town with Mojo in his portfolio. Eanes school district officials named Darren Allman of Odessa Permian to coach the Chaparrals at a board meeting Wednesday night. Allman also will act as the school district's athletic director. The 39-year-old Allman replaces Derek Long, who retired Jan. 29 after more than 30 years at Westlake, including the past six as head football coach.

Few people expected Mansfield Summit to beat Houston Nimitz and its towering 6-8 center, Brittney Griner. "But all it took was the simplest things in the world," Summit forward Starr Crawford said. "Defense and rebounding." And another simple thing: free throws. Summit made 17 of 21 (81 percent). Nimitz made seven of 19 (37 percent), which is terrible for any team and almost unbelievable for a team in a state championship game.
