Socorro’s victory was a long time coming for El Paso baseball, but all it took was two swings from Cory Falvey to end a 60-year streak. Falvey's two home runs and six RBIs at Dell Diamond were enough to lift El Paso Socorro to a 12-7 win over Lufkin in the Class 5A championship game, and give the city of El Paso a state baseball champion for the first time since 1949. After a slight pause, the Trojans’ coach mused: “I guess I’d say we’d be lucky to win a game. We’ll be lucky to win a game.”
Perhaps not wanting to provide clubhouse ammunition for the ballclubs that desire to beat Moody down the road, or even maybe to plant early seeds of expectations in the next class of Trojans, Gallegos is hedging all bets.
