from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Madison's Streety Wins One for the Books
from the San Antonio Express-News
His team one half away from a 0-1 start in District 26-5A, Madison wide receiver Nate Askew sparked the Mavericks' 21-13 victory over New Braunfels with a fiery halftime speech. He harped on playing with more enthusiasm, the team's focus of the week. But at no point did Askew mention that a large box of commemorative hats, emblazoned with the number "300" in honor of the milestone for career victories being chased by Mavericks coach Jim Streety, was in danger of remaining untouched for another week. Lighting Stealing Some of Football Season's Thunder So Far
from The Dallas Morning News HS Game Time
The football season usually starts with a bang, but this year it's been more of a flash-to-bang. Unfortunately, that's not the description of a new potent quarterback-receiver combo. Flash-to-bang actually refers to a way to determine the proximity of lightning, which has been the most electrifying performer of the early season. On three straight Thursdays, games were cancelled or delayed. And then last week, lightning took its toll on the loaded Friday schedule. More

Wall's Experience Shows in Success
from the San Angelo Standard Times
The folks in Wall aren’t used to missing the playoffs very often. Wall showed last week, however, that this year's team might have what it takes to get back. More

Hamshire-Fannett Gets Back to Business after Ike
from the Beaumont Enterprise
When Hamshire-Fannett football coach Walt Mangan talks about the school's new athletic complex, he's quickly reminded of how this historically hasn't been the best week for weather. Two years ago this week, Hurricane Humberto washed ashore and knocked out power. This time last year, Ike washed ashore and either damaged or destroyed every athletic facility on the H-F campus. Now that a year has passed, H-F is hoping it can play ball without being interrupted. More

Anderson High Emerges as Playoff Contenders
from the Austin American-Statesman
Every year a surprise team emerges from the pack of mediocrity to join the football elite of Central Texas. Lake Travis was 4-26 in a three-year stretch before coach Jeff Dicus took over the program in 2003. Stony Point is a state power today, but the Tigers were 0-10 in coach Craig Chessher's first season in 2004. This season has produced another team whose future looks brighter than its past. Please step forward, Anderson High. More

It Can Be Lonely in Front of Uprights for Stephenville's Chavarria
from the Abilene Reporter News
Proper technique for placekicking has been described as being similar to a golf swing. Any deviance from that form can result in a hook, shank or duff. Only for the placekicker, there are precious few opportunities for redemption. Perhaps no one understands this more than Stephenville senior German Chavarria -- considered by some to be the Abilene area’s best at the position. More
