Legendary football coach Moore retiring after 3 years at Aubrey

Aubrey AD Daryl Hellman confirmed that legendary football coach G.A. Moore informed the Aubrey school district he would not return to the sidelines in the fall after spending three seasons as the Chaparrals' head coach. The 73-year-old Moore is the all-time winningest coach in Texas high school football and leaves Aubrey with a career record of 423-97-9 in 45 seasons.

Orangefield head football coach/AD Huckabay resigns

Almost two months after school board members voted to extend his contract for another year, Orangefield head football coach/athletic director Brian Huckabay submitted his resignation. Huckabay, who went 16-14 in three seasons at Orangefield, submitted his resignation at a recent school board meeting, citing health reasons. Interim superintendent Kay Karr said Orangefield ISD will move quickly in its search for a replacement.

THSCA to offer required concussion training

As mandated by H.B. 2038, the UIL is requiring two hours of coaches' concussion education training. The mandated coaches' concussion education course must be fulfilled by Sept. 1. Coaches must complete a total of two hours to fulfill the requirement. The Texas High School Coaches Association will be offering this training at the Annual Coaching School and Convention July 29-Aug. 1 in San Antonio.

After winning the first boys state track title in school history, DeSoto boys track coach Mark Brady is retiring. Brady had been hinting that this would be his final season, saying as much while his team and its fans were celebrating in Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium after the UIL state meet.

McKinney Boyd baseball coach Brandon Milam, who has built the six-year-old program into a perennial Class 5A playoff contender, has announced he's leaving the program for an administrative position in East Texas. McKinney ISD AD Shawn Pratt said Milam will become an assistant principal in Tatum, near Milam's hometown of Carthage. Boyd has reached the 5A state playoffs each of the last three seasons.

Borger ISD officials stayed within their system promoting two current employees as the new head football coach and AD at a recent school board meeting. Girls coordinator and cross country coach Leslie Young will take over the AD duties vacated by Rusty Purser. James Day has been promoted from the Borger defensive coordinator to head football coaching.

Two Valley high schools now have openings for a head baseball coach. Ron Kretz, who had been Harlingen's coach since 2003, was let go after his team failed to make the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. Xavy Acosta was let go after just two years on the job and after one of the best seasons the San Benito baseball program has had in the past several years.

After months of waiting, it appears an answer will finally be given about the athletic coordinator/football coach opening at Brownsville Pace. Interim AC/football coach William Deen, PSJA Memorial offensive coordinator Steve Marroquin and Harlingen High assistant Roberto Lucio are the three finalists for the position. A recommended candidate will be presented to the school board for approval.

The Barbers Hill Lady Eagles hope that a strong girls basketball tradition will help them once again attract one of the best basketball coaches in the state of Texas.
Kit Martin, who guided the Lady Eagles to the 2012 state tournament, has resigned as girls basketball coach at the Class 4A school to take the girls basketball job at Class 5A Mansfield Timberview in the Dallas area.

Hamshire-Fannett approved Tommy Collins as its next boys basketball coach. Collins, who is currently an academic specialist for Lamar football, has been an assistant basketball coach at Lamar under Tom Abatemarco in 1987 and under Tony Branch from 1988 to 1990.
