Sealy. Celina. Lake Travis. For a few more days at least, Sealy and Celina are the only teams in the history of Texas high school football to win state championships in four consecutive seasons.  Granbury High School girls won a basketball game last Tuesday night. It was only their
fourth win of the year, but it's a big one... a very big one.
Their coach, Leta Andrews, has now won more high school games than anyone anywhere who has ever coached high school basketball.

Nothing had stopped Malcolm Brown this past Saturday, until a flood of memories hit him on Steele's last play. He'd just run over Houston Memorial for three touchdowns and a 44-20 state semifinal victory. In the final seconds, Brown began to cry. Brown said he thought back to eighth grade, watching Steele struggle through its first varsity season in 2006. And to mid-September, wondering how he could lead his team back from a 1-2 record. Last spring, Wayne Taylor and Boomer White were part of something special. In May and June they helped lead the Memorial Mustangs to baseball heights they had never reached, all the way to the Class 5A Region III finals, just a step from the state tournament. It was something that Taylor, a catcher and pitcher, and White, an outfielder and the team's leadoff hitter, would never forget. When the Pearland Oilers play the Euless Trinity Trojans this Saturday night for the Class 5A Division 1 state title at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, most people who follow Texas high school football will view them as a big underdog. Their opponent is a defending state champion who has perhaps the best individual player in the state this year, Brandon Carter. Trinity will be looking to capture a fourth state title in the last six years. The Trojans are 82-6 during that span. They have never failed to make the playoffs under their current head coach, Steve Lineweaver. It will be a tall order, indeed, for the Oilers; even impossible, perhaps. Missing the playoffs isn't an option for Carroll this season. Especially after last season, as a young Tigers girls basketball team didn't qualify for the postseason for just the second time in 17 seasons. Pointing to the left wing and then to the right, Andi Jackson dribbled the basketball at the top of the key and showed Aaron Tompkins how to guide his teammates through the offense. Tompkins heeded the direction, something he might not have done three months ago. Jackson coaches the sophomore boys basketball team at Ozen. But there's a difference between Jackson and the other Ozen boys basketball coaches. Jackson is a woman and the first female to coach boys hoops at Ozen and in Beaumont ISD. More |
