NRA backs Cornyn; GOA supports Stockman in Senate race
The Dallas Morning News
The National Rifle Association is backing Republican Sen. John Cornyn in his re-election bid, giving ardently pro-gun challenger Rep. Steve Stockman a setback. Cornyn has a seemingly unassailable A+ rating from the gun rights group. Stockman has been endorsed by Gun Owners of America, another prominent national gun group. The group points to a number of pro-gun bills Stockman has introduced in the House, including bills seeking to eliminate federal gun-free zones around schools and military bases so that those on site could carry firearms to protect themselves and others from shooters.

Groups hold dueling gun buybacks in Dallas
Fort Worth Star Telegram
The goal was to get at least one. But organizers of a recent gun buyback in Dallas say they bought more than a dozen guns from people who wanted them out of their homes. As the church worked to buy guns so they could be destroyed, members of the Come and Take It Texas gun-rights group tried to buy firearms at the same site — so they could be put back into circulation.

Company makes good on leaving Colorado over gun laws
ABC News
One of the country's largest producers of ammunition magazines for guns is leaving Colorado and moving operations to Wyoming and Texas because of new state laws that include restrictions on how many cartridges a magazine can hold. Erie, Colo.-based Magpul Industries Corp. announced that it was moving its production, distribution and shipping operations to Cheyenne and its headquarters to Texas, making good on a vow it made to leave Colorado during last year's gun control debate.

Second Amendment debate continues in Harlingen
Valley Central
The debate around the Second Amendment has returned to the City of Harlingen. Police officers arrested a gun rights activist at a demonstration back in December. But recently, dozens of them rallied outside the Harlingen Police Department. "I'm standing up for second amendment rights and for my Texas right to open carry," said participant Angela L. Peña.

Gun rights debaters analyze mall incident, open-carry event
Beaumont Enterprise
A gun store owner who was arrested was within his rights when he walked through Parkdale Mall with a rifle over his shoulder but was unlikely to get away with it, said a prominent firearms activist with concerns about Texas' gun laws. Mike Stollenwerk, a founding member of the website opencarry.org, said he isn't sure what Derek Poe could have done to convey to the mall's patrons that he wasn't there to cause harm.

Getting a concealed handgun permit easier in 2014
KHOU-TV
Craig Muse decided to spend part of his New Year's Day shopping for a gun because his job takes him through what he considers some dangerous territory. So he plans not only to buy a weapon, but also to get a concealed handgun license. "Oh, yeah, I plan on getting it here in the next two months," he said. "So I'll be getting it soon." But due to a recent change in Texas law, Muse will be eligible for a license after undergoing substantially less training than his grandmother. Beginning last September, the amount of classroom time required for a concealed handgun permit dropped from a minimum of 10 hours to at least four hours.

Gun show at Travis County Expo Center will be no more
Austin American-Statesman
Travis County won't be hosting a gun show in its Exposition Center after this month, after county commissioners did not renew a lease for the controversial event. Saxet Gun Shows has been hosting the nearly-monthly show at the Expo Center since 2010 and had been negotiating a new contract for eight shows from March to January 2015, but got nowhere as county officials wanted the company to require background checks for all firearm sales. The company refused to require background checks for all transactions, and neither side has budged in the weeks of discussions, officials said.

Federal judge: Ban on gun sales unconstitutional
The Burleson Star
A federal judge has potentially opened a new market to gun dealers after ruling that Chicago ordinances banning the sale of guns within the city's limits in an effort to reduce gun violence are unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang said that while the government has a duty to protect its citizens, it's also obligated to protect constitutional rights, including the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense. However, Chang said he would temporarily stay the effects of his ruling, meaning the ordinances can stand while the city decides whether to appeal.
