Back in early November when duck and goose season opened, most hunters were concerned about what was ahead in hunting because of the extreme dry conditions all across Texas. There was speculation the birds would not hang around long with low supplies of fresh and brackish water and would end up moving farther south into Mexico or Central America.

DSC Convention sets records for event size, attendance, fundraising

The Dallas Safari Club wrapped up its annual convention and expo with new records for event size, attendance and fundraising. Always the first Thursday-through-Sunday in January, DSC's 2012 show was Jan. 5-8 at the Dallas Convention Center. The event also generated brisk sales for many exhibitors, according to a DSC news release.

The president's cavalier attitude toward gun owners could undermine his re-election effort, especially in New Hampshire, where guns mean jobs. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa announced that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has been scheduled to testify on Feb. 2 about the Department of Justice's knowledge of, and response to, gunwalking that occurred in Operation Fast and Furious. The attorney general will be asked to address management deficiencies within the Department that occurred both during and after the conclusion of Operation Fast and Furious.

NSSF awards grants to collegiate shooting programs

Since the start of its Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative three years ago, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has awarded nearly $600,000 to college programs that provide recreational and competitive target shooting opportunities to students and faculty. The program is successfully raising awareness about recreational shooting and firearm safety on campuses across the country.

A few glimmers of hope concerning bobwhite quail were offered at the Dallas Safari Club convention and expo. Dr. Dale Rollins of the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch near Rotan, gave a lecture titled "Where Have All the Quail Gone" as part the new "Upland Country" section of the event.

The Dallas Safari Club has responded to the budgetary crisis at Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. with a $10,000 grant awarded Jan. 6 at the DSC convention and expo. The event runs Jan. 5-8, at the Dallas Convention Center. "The record drought and heat, devastating wildfires and drop in park visitation have led to a critical situation for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. This grant is a token of help for our longtime conservation partner, to be used as they see best," said Ben Carter, DSC executive director.

Members of the USA Shooting Team attended the Dallas Safari Club Convention at the Dallas Convention Center. Athletes Miranda Wilder (Diana, Texas), Janessa Beaman (Elbert, Colo.), Caitlin Weinheimer (Kerrville, Texas), Collin Wietfeldt (Hemlock, Mich.) and Kayle Browning (Wooster, Ark.) were on hand to meet fans, promote the shooting sports and represent USA Shooting.

Judging from sales receipts and FBI reports regarding sales for December 2011, it seems that Santa delivered at least 1.5 million firearms for Christmas. The FBI performed a record setting number of background checks in a month 1.5 million in December alone.
