Texas gun show loses county venue after refusing background checks
Fox News
A dispute over background checks is preventing a Texas county from hosting a long-running gun show at its Exposition Center. Travis County commissioners did not renew a lease for the controversial event, according to the Austin American-Statesman. Saxet Gun Shows has hosted a show nearly every month since 2010, but when county officials wanted the company to require background checks for all firearm transactions, Saxet refused.

Texas school district in hot water after Second Amendment misinterpreted in high school textbook
Culture Map Austin
A parent in Denton has taken to the Internet to voice his discontent over an Advanced Placement U.S. history textbook that summarizes the Second Amendment as when "the people have the right to keep and bear arms in a state militia." This is, of course, a loose, perhaps even incorrect, interpretation of the Second Amendment, which reads, in full: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Texas mall erects 'no guns allowed' signs after man with AR-15 charged with disorderly conduct
Burt Orange Report
Parkdale Mall in Beaumont is clarifying its ban on all guns on its property in response to an incident where Derek Poe was charged with disorderly conduct for carrying an AR-15 slung across his back. The man, who owns a tactical equipment store in the mall, still maintains his innocence and is now engaged in organizing an open carry march described as, "a stroll down Dowlen Road to exercise our Second Amendment Rights Long Guns on display, slung in a non-threatening, casual manner, of course."

NRA offers shooters' insurance
Chicago Tribune
Shooting someone in self-defense can be costly. But if you do end up being charged with a felony, the National Rifle Association offers its members an insurance policy that could pay thousands of dollars in legal costs. The concealed carry liability insurance, which ranges from $165 a year for a $100,000 policy to $600 a year for $1 million in coverage, reimburses attorney fees and other legal costs resulting from criminal or civil case defense. Proceeds from the premiums go to the NRA.

Dramatized video of Trayvon Martin shooting calls out Texas gun laws
Culture Map Dallas
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has recreated the night Trayvon Martin was killed in a dramatic PSA that asks Americans to "stand up to 'Stand Your Ground Laws.'" Twenty-six states including Texas currently have some form of law allowing for deadly force if one feels threatened. The video, which was posted Aug. 19, 2013, takes several creative liberties with the accepted story line in which neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in a Florida apartment complex. Zimmerman was acquitted for Martin's death in July.

Cornyn introduces gun bill as challenger questions his Second Amendment cred
KUHF-FM
The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would treat state-issued concealed-carry permits like driver's licenses and allow permit holders to carry guns in all states. Only the District of Columbia does not have a concealed carry law. For Houston gun store owner Jim Pruett, the bill would be beneficial. He has a Texas concealed carry license and carries his gun wherever he goes — except when he travels to some other states.

Gun owner unarmed, unwelcome in Maryland
The Tampa Tribune
Trouble, in fact, was the last thing on his mind a few weeks back as John Filippidises packed for Christmas and a family wedding in Woodridge, N.J., so he left the pistol locked in the safe. The state of Florida might have codified his Second Amendment rights, but he knew he'd be passing through states where recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions affirming the rights of individuals to keep and bear arms have been met by hostile legislatures and local officials.
