Threat Management Under Stress For Responsible Armed Citizens

San Antonio, Texas 24-25 May 2014

The long and the short of it
Guns Magazine
By Massad Ayoob: "Back in the 1960s, when I was a kid-shooting bull's-eye, I noticed most of the young and prime-of-life shooters used long-barreled pistols. The S&W Model 41 with 7-inch tube, the High Standard Supermatic series with fluted 7.25-inch barrel, and the 6-7/8-inch Ruger Mark I. The older guys, however, were much likelier to 'go short' with a 5.5-inch heavy barrel on their Smith, H-S or Ruger. When I asked why, in those days before optical sights on .22 target pistols, I always got the same answer: 'When my eyes got older, I could see the front sight better with a shorter sight radius.'"

Study suggests red dot optics improve pistol accuracy
Gun Digest
There are few things shooters obsess over more than accuracy. Unfortunately, there are few shortcuts in developing tack-driving precision when behind the trigger. Or is there? A recent study by James E. Ryan and Robin Adler suggests there might be one accessory that will tighten up a handgun shooter's groups in a hurry — a red dot sight. The criminology professors at Vermont's Norwich University came to this conclusion after running a comparative study between the optic and iron sights.

The terminal vagueness of 'Everytown'
National Review
Well, well, well — another one bites the dust. No sooner had Michael Bloomberg's latest gun-control effort been launched upon an indifferent nation than the group's head honcho had announced that he was stepping down. "It's time for me to hand off the fight to somebody else," Everytown for Gun Safety's Executive Director, Mark Glaze, explained to Yahoo News recently.

Why you should be concerned about the new 'smart guns'
Forbes
Smart guns, which just entered the market, are firearms equipped with small embedded computers that are supposed to enhance safety by preventing anyone other than authorized parties from firing the weapons, and, in some cases, by ensuring that the guns only fire when aimed at inanimate targets.

Safety, shooting and gun ownership
Shooter's Log
By Bob Campbell: "Safety is the No. 1 focus when using any firearm. There are too many preventable accidents and deaths caused by people who do not go to the range to practice or who mishandle their weapons at home. Make sure you, and your loved ones, are trained and understand the safety rules. I am a man of many interests and try not to be single-minded. I look at every point of view and leave some things to those better qualified to comment. The NRA and Second Amendment Foundation best handle politics and the political-action front. After all, we have a two-party system, the Democrats and the Americans."

Is the high-capacity 9mm the right gun for you?
Shooter's Log
By Bob Campbell: "Is high-capacity 9 millimeter the way to go? For some of us it is. I am aware of trends. I observe many and take notes until the trend asserts itself as more than a fad. Tradition takes longer to recognize: I am glad that when I run out of things to teach, I am still able to learn. I have noticed a trend among beginning students and also hardcore defense shooters. A number of shooters have experimented with different handguns although in the end chose a high-capacity 9mm pistol as a personal defense sidearm."

By John McAdams
Even though many people treat the .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO cartridges as interchangeable rounds, this can be a dangerous practice under the wrong circumstances. It is true that the two cartridges are quite similar. However, there are some subtle, yet important differences between the .223 Remington and the 5.56x45mm cartridges. Today, I'll go over some of the differences between the two rounds and some good practices to follow when using them.

2nd Amendment rally cry: 'I like my guns like Obama likes his voters — undocumented'
The Washington Post
"Undocumented." That's the punch line of a sign that hangs outside a Katy, Texas, gun shop called Tactical Firearms. And the lead-up line, Mediaite reported: "I like my guns like Obama likes his voters." The Houston-area shop changes its sign each week, with staffers contributing their best one-liners. This week's bit comes courtesy of recognition of Texas state law that rejects the notion of firearms registrations, the shop owner told a local newspaper.
