Threat Management Under Stress For Responsible Armed Citizens

San Antonio, Texas 24-25 May 2014

Poll shows why gun control looks impossible
The Wall Street Journal
When President Barack Obama made a push for stricter gun control laws the first major policy push of his second term, he repeatedly cited polling showing wide support for expanded background checks for gun purchases. But despite the December 2012 massacre at Newtown, Connecticut, there was never a true national outcry for new federal gun restrictions, just like little was accomplished after previous mass shootings that briefly drew national outrage.

Targeted? Gun sellers say 'high risk' label from feds cuts off banking options, restricts business
The Washington Times
Gun retailers say the Obama administration is trying to put them out of business with regulations and investigations that bypass Congress and choke off their lines of credit, freeze their assets and prohibit online sales. Since 2011, regulators have increased scrutiny on banks' customers. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in 2011 urged banks to better manage the risks of their merchant customers who employ payment processors, such as PayPal, for credit card transactions. The FDIC listed gun retailers as "high risk" along with porn stores and drug paraphernalia shops.

Keeping safe in the woods, water
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
There's no such thing as a bad time to be an outdoorsman. Those adventures, big and small, are wonderful. Provided you live to tell about them. Fortunately, your chances of going to the woods or water and coming back out alive are better today than when granddad was totting his paddle or shotgun.

Hybrid holsters for concealed carry
Gun Digest
Hybrid holsters have become hugely popular in the last few years. One such is Mark Craighead's Crossbreed brand, so popular the brand has become almost a generic term for this sort of rig. As the name implies, the hybrids comprise a mating of leather with Kydex or polymer. The portion that encompasses the gun on the outside is made of the hard synthetic, while the leather is used to form a broad backing between wearer and holster, separating and protecting one from the other.

Take your 'X' with you and turn the tables on a violent attacker
Ammo Land
Bob Harvey, president/chief Instructor of South Florida Gun School writes: "We have heard time and time again, move now or get off the "X" in a gunfight. I don't believe you can get off the "X". I contend that you move the "X" to get the violent attacker off of his game or Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act Loop. I have been teaching this for over three decades. It increases your survivability 10 fold."

Guns.com
The 1911 is the M1 Garand of handguns. The classic and powerful handgun is an example of what a pistol should be. This classic .45 automatic is a perfect balance between function and form. It's complicated, but not needlessly so, like all Browning designs, it's very elegant. From its brilliant trigger design to the unobtrusive grip safety. Every shortcoming of John Moses Browning's magnum opus can be overcome with enough cash. The only real issue with the 1911 is price. This is doubly true when it comes to concealed carry appropriate models.

Turkey hunting technique tests ethics, risks safety
The Spokesman-Review
An old technique of hiding behind a gobbler decoy to stalk wild turkeys is being revived — much to the dismay of hunter safety educators. Native Americans, for example, camouflaged themselves with the horns and skins of buffalo to stalk bison. The tactic's effectiveness was all that was important for Indians hunting to survive. But sportsmen have more to consider.

Man on the street: What's the best cartridge for self-defense?
Guns & Ammo
Opinions surrounding the best rounds for self-defense vary as widely as the guns that chamber them, and there's likely no definite answer in sight — but when the time comes to protect ourselves, a .22 in the pocket is better than a .45 in the safe. G&A wanted to find out which cartridges are most commonly carried these days, so we asked NRA Members what kind of firepower they prefer to pack.

Pediatricians take on the NRA over gun safety
The Daily Beast
For the past three decades, the American Academy of Pediatrics — some 62,000 members strong — has been an outspoken voice on the issue of gun control, a position that has landed it on the NRA's list of enemies. In 1992, the AAP issued its first policy statement supporting a handgun and assault weapons ban, making it the first public health organization to do so, and it has long recommended that doctors talk about gun safety with parents. Since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, the AAP has stepped up attempts to educate parents about gun safety around children.

5 mature buck myths dashed
American Hunter
By Frank Miniter: "When I ask deer researchers what GPS-collar studies are telling them about mature-buck movement the first thing they all tell me is 'mature bucks are individuals.' No deer hunter who has tried to pattern more than one mature buck would dispute that, but this answer bothers me, as it insinuates there are no concrete answers. So I push the deer biologists for more and they say things like: 'Well, on deeper analysis we can fit many bucks into different personality profiles; when you know a buck's personality type you can better predict its movement.'"
