Tactical shooting in Texas not just for law enforcement, sport gaining popularity

The buzzer sounded and Gary Johnson grabbed an empty handgun from the table, picked up a full magazine, loaded it into the pistol, pulled back the slide and began shooting. In a matter of seconds, close to a dozen paper targets representing assailants had two shots in them; two other targets, representing bystanders, were untouched.

Take a closer look at the 4-H Shooting Sports program

Next to the livestock projects, one of the most popular 4-H general projects to participate in is shooting sports. This year, Sedgwick County 4-H has 14 members enrolled in the shooting sports program with three adult leaders to mentor them. Members are able to choose which shooting sports discipline they are most interested in to enroll in as a project. Those disciplines are: air rifle, archery, .22 rifle, shotgun, black powder, air pistol and outdoor skills.

Demand for gun training grows among women

Interest in gun training classes has never been higher in some parts of Middle Tennessee. In fact, it's so high for one Bedford County training group that it held its first gun safety class for women only. Defensive Consulting Group offered the class on Mother's Day weekend because its owners said sometimes women tell them they're not as comfortable taking the class around men, and they wanted to make sure their students learn gun safety skills in as comfortable environment as possible.

NRA introduces National Mid-Range Championships to Camp Perry

There's a new championship in the lineup at Camp Perry this year, the NRA National Mid-Range Championships. Created due to rising popularity of F-Class shooting, the new 3000-point championships will be shot from ranges of 300, 500 and 600 yards and will add yet another fun sport to the annual Remington/NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships.

Democrats offer gun control bill inspired by latest James Bond movie 'Skyfall'

A House Democrat inspired by the last James Bond movie has offered legislation to produce handguns with "personalization technology." The idea is to produce guns that can only be used by the gun's owners. Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., cited the latest James Bond movie, "Skyfall," as inspiration for the bill.

Bill to prohibit enforcement of federal gun laws dies in senate
Texas Public Radio
House Bill 928 would criminalize any police officer enforcing a new federal gun law in the state of Texas, and it immediately struck tensions between Sen. Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls, and Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston. "I could be for this if you take an amendment I'm going to offer to your bill," said Ellis. "I'm going to offer an amendment to close the 'gun show loophole.'"

Ted Cruz duels with Joe Biden with gun control editorials

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in the wake of the collapse of gun control legislation in the Senate, famously challenged Vice President Joe Biden to a debate on the subject of gun control and the relationship of private gun ownership to violent crime. Illinois residents gear up for new gun laws, fill firearms training classes

While Illinois is currently the only state that denies residents the right to carry firearms, either concealed or openly, a federal appeals court has placed an early June deadline for state lawmakers to agree on some form of concealed carry for its residents. It's been an epic battle between lawmakers, but as the deadline quickly approaches, residents are flocking to firearm training classes, even without knowing if those classes will meet the new gun legislation requirements.

California law takes effect on microstamping guns
The Sacramento Bee
A California law that requires all semi-automatic handguns to be equipped with technology that stamps its identifying information on bullet casings is now in effect after years of delays. Though signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007, the law couldn't take effect as it was supposed to in 2010 because of patents on the technology, including at least one that had been bought up by a gun rights group to delay the law's implementation.
