10 Father's Day gifts for the shooting dad
Guns & Ammo
Father's Day is an opportunity to show your dad what he means to you. Chances are he is the foundation of your interest in firearms. Most of us were taught to shoot by our fathers at a young age, whether through sporting clays, plinking with a .22 or being brought along on our first hunt. Father's Day is a great chance to pay him back for bringing you into this hobby you have since grown to love.

Texas a big step closer to major gun rights expansion
The Associated Press via CBS News
Texas recently took a giant step closer to allowing concealed handguns in college classrooms, with House lawmakers giving their preliminary approval to a so-called "campus carry" measure, barely beating a midnight deadline. The legislation, one of the two major gun rights bills of the session, had appeared destined to fail, with more than 100 amendments lined up in a Democratic effort to kill it.

Student sues Texas college over gun rights sign
The Tactical Wire
Blinn College student Nicole Sanders filed a First Amendment lawsuit against the public institution near Houston recently after being told by an administrator last February that she would need "special permission" to display a gun rights sign and collect signatures for her student group on campus. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education assisted Sanders in filing the federal lawsuit, the tenth lawsuit filed as part of FIRE's national Stand Up For Speech Litigation Project.

  SHOOT A .22 WITHOUT RIMFIRE

The new Umarex Octane pellet rifle shoots .22 caliber pellets at rimfire speeds with the ReAxis gas piston. These air rifles use the SilencAir system to reduce muzzle noise. Rimfire costs 4x as much as pellets and rimfire availability is still problematic.

See if the Octane is right for you.

The AR for home defense: One expert's opinion
Amercian Rifleman
One of today's best-known and most respected trainers in the art of gun fighting, retired Sgt./Maj. Kyle E. Lamb, spent more than 21 years with the U.S. Army — more than 15 years of which were in Special Operations. Lamb is one of those who has "been there and done that" — including combat operations such as the infamous "Blackhawk Down" incident in Mogadishu, Somalia, and throughout numerous tours in Iraq and Bosnia. He currently operates Viking Tactics as a military, law enforcement and civilian trainer teaching courses in tactical entry and the use of the carbine, among others. Lamb is an unassuming individual who has the appearance of an "average Joe," but when it comes to kitchen-table discussions about the effectiveness of the general-purpose rifle — in today's guise, the AR carbine — for use in a home-defense scenario, he is anything but. That's why we decided to sit down with him for a question-and-answer session on exactly that topic. Here's what he had to say.

Man on the street: Do you hunt with suppressors?
Guns & Ammo
Within the past few years the number of states allowing for civilian ownership of suppressors has continued to grow. In most of these states, and in other states where suppressors are legal, hunting with suppressors is also permitted. This allows hunters who own suppressors to leave the ear protection at home when venturing afield, giving them greater situational awareness without risking potential hearing loss. It also offers hunters the ability to shoot without disrupting neighbors or frightening game for other hunters in the area. While there are some clear advantages to using suppressors, and many hunters utilize them for these benefits, not all hunters use suppressors where permitted for a variety of reasons.

Shooting stance: 7 key components of the upper triangle
Ammoland
We all were told at some point in our training to "relax, squeeze the trigger slowly and let the gun kick freely." This makes sense when you're just starting out, but if you want to shoot faster and maintain a high degree of accuracy, this basic advice will have to evolve. You will have to do things differently.

Increasing your odds of success during deer season
By John McAdams
In the United States, the majority of big-game hunters use centerfire rifles during the general deer-hunting season. While there are many advantages to hunting with a centerfire rifle, the general deer hunting seasons are often the shortest and most crowded. Luckily, there is a way around these hurdles: hunting during the archery or muzzleloader seasons. While every state is different, hunting with a bow or a muzzleloader will increase (sometimes significantly) the length of your deer hunting season.
