'School marshals' bill headed to Perry's office
San Antonio Express-News
The "Protection of Texas Children Act," which provides for the creation of "school marshals," was approved by the Senate, overcoming four Democrats' nay votes, and now awaits Gov. Rick Perry's signature. Nearing a terminal deadline, it's one of a few gun-friendly bills to survive the waning legislative session while several others have been stymied by Democrats.

The safety payoff of the big business of gun training
Marketplace
You'd think that, with all the talk in Washington about the IRS, Benghazi, the AP's phone records, and oh yeah, immigration, that the debate over gun control is over. But a few determined senators still want to bring the issue of expanded background checks up for a vote sometime this summer.

Texas House kills bill to let lawmakers carry concealed pistols anywhere
The Austin American-Statesman
A bill that would have allowed Texas state officials and lawmakers to carry concealed weapons almost anywhere they wish, even in places where other Texans cannot, was killed by the Texas House. The House refused to approve a final version of House Bill 508, just hours after the Senate had approved that version 22-9 — with opponents expressing alarm that they were giving themselves an unneeded special privilege.

Are background checks a wedge issue for 2014?
The Washington Post
The Senate's rejection of a popular expansion of background checks for firearms marked an abrupt end to the campaign for gun restrictions after the Newtown, Conn., shootings. Best pistol ever: What makes the 1911 so good?
Shooting Times
For more than 10 decades the Colt Government Model 1911 has been without challenge the most recognized, most imitated, most influential and most used semiautomatic handgun in the world. Some call it the best pistol ever. It is to autoloaders what the Colt Single Action Army is to revolvers. If anything, the Model 1911 pistol — in all its forms, chamberings and variations — is more popular today worldwide than it has been at any time since John Browning applied for the basic patents underlying its design. No other firearm on earth can match its record for longevity, versatility and performance.

Gun manufacturer bill fires a blank
Austin Business Journal
A Senate bill to provide economic development incentives for Texas firearm manufacturers failed to pass, despite Gov. Rick Perry throwing his weight behind Texas becoming a refuge for such businesses affected by gun-control efforts in other states. Senate Bill 1467, authored by State Sen. Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls, would have also provided incentives to firearms accessories and ammunition manufacturers.
