Threat Management Under Stress For Responsible Armed Citizens

San Antonio, Texas 24-25 May 2014

How to zero your AR-15 rifle
AmmoLand
Bullet trajectory is almost as simple as dropping a brick, except the bullet flies forward where a brick just drops towards the ground. When you fire a bullet, there is no magical force that helps it defeat gravity. In fact, if you fire a bullet from your AR type rifle, perfectly parallel to the ground, the bullet you fire will end up hitting the ground at just about the same time as a bullet you let fall from your hand straight down.

Supreme Court upholds Federal ban on 'straw' purchases of guns
The Wall Street Journal
A federal law banning the "straw" purchase of guns on behalf of others applies even to transactions where the person who ends up with the weapon could have legally acquired a firearm, the Supreme Court ruled. Justice Elena Kagan, writing for a court divided 5-4, rejected arguments from gun-rights groups who complained of arbitrary gun-purchase prosecutions, saying the outcome was necessary to retain whatever impact the law had in preventing "felons, drug addicts, and the mentally ill" from obtaining firearms.

Popular hunting program going green
Houston Chronicle
About this time each summer for the past couple of decades, the tens of thousands of hunters who the year before mailed in applications for permits in Texas' Public Hunt Draw Program found in their mailboxes a 90-or-so-page booklet containing all the information and application forms for the coming season's hunts. This year, they're getting a letter. And, for all practical purposes, that will be the last time the U.S. Postal Service is involved in any interaction between hunters and the state's hugely popular Public Hunt Draw Program.

10 resasons why states should reject 'assault weapon' and 'large' magazine bans
AmmoLand
In the late 1980s, gun control groups realized that they had failed in their original goal—getting handguns banned — and began campaigning against semi-automatic firearms they called “assault weapons,” most of which are rifles. Gun control supporters demanding a ban on “assault weapons” have also demanded a ban on ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, most of which are designed for self-defense handguns. Here are 10 reasons why states should reject those bans.

Don't overlook the shoulder holster
American Rifleman
There was a time when the shoulder holster seemed to be required equipment for all police detectives, P.I.’s, sleuths and all sorts of plainclothes operatives. In recent times it has taken a back seat to the various other carry methods. In truth, the shoulder rig is not as fast as a good holster worn on the strong-side hip, and the straps of the unit can often cause fatigue to the shoulder muscles after a long day of wearing a heavy handgun. However, it should not be overlooked by today’s handgunners, as it may be just the ticket for certain defensive carry situations.

The other deer season is open
North Texas e-News
Before the title to this column misleads someone, whitetail deer season is not open but axis deer are plentiful in much of Texas and summer is prime time to hunt them. The Hill Country and southwest Texas has a large number of free ranging Axis and, because of stocking on low fence ranches across the state, there are pockets of free ranging axis in areas outside the Hill Country. Gunfight video has valuable lessons
AmmoLand
On May 21 in Youngstown, Ohio, a couple of teenage criminals attempted to rob a Sami Quick Stop a little after midnight. The armed confrontation that ensued resulted in one robber wounded, both captured, and minimum damage to the store. One of the suspects is reported to have dropped a rifle as he fled. There are several lessons to be learned from the video. As is common, numerous things could have been done better by all three participants.

Youth shotguns and ammo
Field and Stream
When Phil Bourjaily asked for reader questions for “The Gun Nuts” a while back, several readers wanted to know his opinion on guns for kids. A lot of people start their children quite young, but Bourjaily started his older son and one of his classmates hunting and shooting when they were 12, and his younger son when he was 11, so he can't speak to guns for very young kids.

How to choose a second rifle on a budget
GUNS
If you’ve ever asked the question, “What first rifle should I get?” You’ve probably received the standard answer: “something in .22 LR.” Indeed, this is an excellent introductory round. It establishes the core elements of breath, sights and trigger — the fundamentals necessary for a new gunner to blossom into a proficient rifleman. The one thing that .22 LR rifles can’t do, is prepare shooters for the recoil of centerfire rounds. You could graduate from .22 LR to .223 without too much trouble, but the cost of .223 ammo and a rifle that fires it accurately can put this beyond the economic reach of many new shooters.

Extend your effective hunting range
American Rifleman
Traditionally, firearm training available to citizen shooters has encompassed the basic fundamentals (on which NRA’s basic rifle class does an excellent job) and, more recently, tactical applications. Hunters wanting to learn to shoot better, or at farther distances, had to learn on their own or attend a tactical course not applicable to their needs. Magpul Dynamics recognized the need for such training and developed a two-day course tailored to the hunter.

A crash in ammunition prices is coming
Ammoland
Handgun and rifle ammunition has been hard to find at times. .22 long rifle ammunition tripled in price over the last 18 months. People would line up to buy ammunition at prices two and three times the level that they were just two years ago. All of that is about to change — ammunition supply looks as though it is ready to catch up with demand.
